I picked up a 5 layer head gasket from a friend of mine and just asking to see if there is any special things i need to do for installation other than just toss it on and torqued the head down correctly. Anybody know? thanks
the instructions say to spray the gasket with some high temp engine enamel paint stuff, Or there is the normal dodge gasket sealer stuff. I am not sure what is the best method. Also not sure how dry you let it get before you put it on.
there is normal Chrysler gasket spray thats pretty awesome stuff.
The gasket spray helps seal small imperfections in the cylinder head and engine block. First came out when the 1 gen neons had all the head gasket problems. Helped seal up all the pitting from corrosion.
I used copper gasket on mine (the spray kind) on both sides. Same shit I use for exhaust gaskets, too. Just make sure the top of the engine is spotless and there's NO old gasket material left and torque down according to the FSM and you'll be golden.

I love turbo lag, it gives you a second to reflect about the poor decision you have just made.
Also headbolts are reusable and headstuds are CERTAINLY reusable.
Honestly though, the stock headbolts are very cheap. If they have been on there for awhile, I would get new ones.
true dat
arp head studs are designed so that you can reuse them many times. Even with 85ft\lbs of final torque, is only about 70-75% yield strength of the fastner.

Get all the old crap off with a green pad or something. Don't use a flapwheel. If you have to scrape anything don't use a metal scraper. Get a plastic one. Clean it real good with Brakleen. Then I too used copper spray on gasket maker. The Mopar stuff is good to so I hear but I ddn't feel like fucking with the dealer. Make sure you follow the torqueing procedures to a T for the headstuds/bolts w/e the fuck you want to call them.
Alright i threw it on with new stock head bolts and torqued it up to specs, but i didnt know about the copper gasket spray. Am i gunna be good if i didnt use it??
The FSM says to use the spray. It may seal without it, but I would certainly use it. We recently pulled the heads off of an LS1 that we just put the spray on, and it was like glue. It really helps seal up any imperfection that may be there.

If you torqued it right I think you will be OK. What are your horsepower goals?
Might be kinda stressful for no gasket and stock head studs. If it wasn't too big a deal I would go head and spray the gasket stuff on there. If it's all back together, you gotta borrow tools and a garage...I'd say fuck it.
we just installed a new dcr head gasket and new arp head studs @ 85 lbs, but put it on dry without applying the spray on sealant. The head had a skim cut taken off the bottom at the machine shop when we had it pressure tested. Havent put anything else back on yet. assume that i cant unbolt and spray now without buying new gasket? should I just leave as is and hope for best?
