Ok well I finally got bit by the nitrous gremlins. Actually this is not a fair statement as the nitrous is not to blame at all. Stupidity or lazeness or trust is to blame or I guess all of the above.. I have not been around here in awhile but the old timers know me and now that I am very carefull. I have always thought that nitrous is one the safest ways to increase power with the proper equipment, and I still do, even after this. I use all the proper safety equipment and data log everything. However I apparently did not use my friend properly.
We went to the track a few weeks back to get the car ready for the Beat The Heat World Finals. It was apparently a great night and on my first run I ran a 11.02. That is the fastest I have run to date and that was only with a 65 shot of nitrous. Since I had not had any traction problems on the run we decided to try to get the car into the 10's by changing to a 80hp jet. When I got to the pits to change out the jets someone came over and asked for some help so I went to help them and my friend, who I used to trust completly, stayed to work on the car. When I got back he said he had changed out the jets and I was ready to go. I have a tps switch and an rpm switch that automatically triggers the nitrous in first gear at 3500 rpms and a a/f shutoff switch to cut off the nitrous in case of any problems. Well as soon as the nitrous came on the engine shook furiously and boom. It was so violent that a rod was thrown through the side of a block.
To make this story short the umm "friend" or currently known as "the moron", some how did not put the nitrous jet in the car. He left it so there was no jet whatsoever in the nitrous side. In case you dont know this is bad, and no amount of safety features will save you. It took less than a second for the car to go boom and now I need a new short block. Oh well back to the starting blocks. I guess its time to get a built bottom end, go direct port, bigger turbo, and try for the 9s.
I will add some pictures of the rods and eventually the hole through the block when I get the engine out. It will be awhile as I am currently working on my wifes 80 Firebird with a 462 big block that is currently at 650hp naturally aspirated but set up to handle a very large shot of nitrous.

What did your friend say when you asked him about the missing jet? Like Kevin implied you would have to work at it to put the nozzle together without the jet in it...

When I got home and took it apart, I first I found that the threads on the connection had been stripped. I was upset at that point as I had just replaced the line from the bottle to the solonoid and the line from the solonoid to the nozzle. I think my heart actually for a bit when I saw that there was not a jet in there. I even looked around for a good 10 minutes to make sure that I hadnt pulled it out upon dissassembly but I knew all along I hadnt dropped it. I was beyond pissed. I had to wait 2 days to even call the guy as I may have killed him. When I finally called him (he didnt call me or come by during the days following even though he had been here everyday working on my wifes car before the incident) he said that he had problems getting the nitrous side line threaded on. He said he had to take it completly off and restart it 3 times before he finally got it threaded. He tried to tell me that he was certain that there was a jet in there and that either I lost it or I was just trying to "f" him over in someway to make myself look better. I had to hang up the phone at the time before I curled over in anger or he curled over from some kind of violent thoughts that were eminating from me. About 8 hours later I got an email apologizing for the whole thing with the statement that he was looking for a new block. I have yet to be able to really talk to him and he hasnt brought me a new block so I am guessing he will not be around here and I will not get the block from him.
I never though something like this would happen to me. I was waiting and expecting to blow my clutch as mine has hundreds and hundreds of runs on it but I didnt expect my "street" car would blow an engine, at least on that night. I have tried running as high as 105hp + shot with a stock bottom end and a single wet kit and expected bad things to happen but they didnt. Since then I have been very conservative, running as small of a jet as I needed to hit my dial in. As a matter of fact that was the first time I went over a 65 shot in about a year and I only did it to see if I could hit that magical 10.999. Well the 10.999 didnt happen but I did get a .001 reaction time. I guess at least there's that.
ya this sucks. i alway see post install party bring beer and hang out. me i work fully alone on my car lock the garage and do everything for myself. i never have problems with my parts after.
That does suck all around, but you can't honestly expect someone who volunteers his time to help you as a friend pay for anything do you? I mean, if he feels responsible, as him... I'd want to do something. But if he's helping you for nothing, you can't honestly hold him responsible in my opinion.

Well an honest mistake is different than completly leaving out a part. Much less when that particular part WILL DEFINATLY destroy the engine if left off. I did not ask him to change out the jet. I really didnt expect him to change out the jet but he did. I do not expect him to pay for the engine but if I had done something so stupid and careless I would have payed for it. Leaving out a nitrous jet is such a big mistake you have to ask yourself if it was intentional.
If anyone can tell me of ever hearing of someone leaving out a nitrous jet through a mistake, through ignorance, or for that matter for malice please let me know. I have never, ever heard of it happening before to anyone else. I am sure it has happend, I just have never heard of it.
Second if you did this to someones car what would you do?
In the end it is truly my mistake. I have been told that I am obsessive compulsive about working on cars, car maintainance, and cleanleness when working on cars so I cant believe I did not double check this. I should have checked behind him. I mean I always double check the torque on all bolts that someone else installs, but I didnt check the jets? I must be a moron myslef. Just let others learn from my mistake.
your being too hard on yourself. It sucks that it happened, but rebuild bigger and better, get that 10.99 pass. If he's that good of a friend and helper, you should call him and forgive. Accidents do happen, at least all the lugs were tight on the rims, right?

hope things work out.
The only real reason I am having such a hard time about it is that after it happend and before we knew what had caused the damage he did not call me or come by. Before this he was at my house everyday. He was supposed to be there the day after it happend and he never showed and didnt call. This is completly unlike him. I had not even considered that there was a problem with the nitrous at the strip. I keep asking myself if he didnt show the next day because he already knew why the engine had blown. It just seems fishy to me. Maybe I am wrong. I am not one to hold grudges but his actions just dont seem right to me.
