Default nitrous and an automatic

someone explain to me how it works.... how nitrous works on an automatic car

i'm looking to put nitrous in my dodge ram 1500 5.9 automatic....... redline is like 5200 (i think).....

so if i have the window switch set up for say 3k-5k rmps..... when the tranny shifts gears and it goes from 5k back down to whatever, wouldn't the nitrous be on the whole time? bc it's going to be WOT the whole time and it's in the "window" that the switch is set up for

so how do you set this up on an auto?.... im really confused on how you'd do it.... do i need a certain controller/switch?

haha....... i think it'll run better than that.... i watched some vid's on streetfire & went on this dyno/timeslip website and there's TONS of ppl in the 12's at over 108-110 with nitrous, exhaust, headers, etc.

that would work i would use the window switch to shut off right before you change gears so it wouldnt be spraying in that time and be easyer an the tranny. auto tranny rebuild is high

well that's what i mean...... i dont think it'd be a good idea to spray while the tranny is shifting

maybe i could hook up that window switch along with a "go baby go" switch and push the switch when it's actually in gear

and a new tranny is only like 850 plus shipping....which isn't too bad IMHO

if yours doesn't blow after 5 runs i'll try it, but only if you hit a 12 with it, it just wouldn't make sense if it was a 14 sec run...tho it would be fun

yes it would...... my goal is to get a 12 this year.... at atleast 105 mph.... we'll see what happens

im thinking of starting with a 100 shot.... then working my way up to a 150 shot- i've seen tons of vid's and read of ppl doing it so i figure why the hell not

if the engine blows it blows- i'll just throw a new one in

The nitrous kit really doesn't care whether you have an auto or manual.. infact it won't even know the difference. You spray the same either way, the only difference is that you don't have to shift, or lift off the throttle, so it'll be spraying the whole time. As long as your RPM is still inside of the window after an upshift, it'll keep spraying.

Almost all nitrous kit manufacturers recommend using any auto trans when using nitrous anyway. Nitrous causes clutches to slip and axles to break on a manual.

so even though it's spraying when it's shifting it wont make a differnce? i thought that might put more strain/stress on the tranny...... i guess im wrong

As long as the clutchpacks in the auto are strong enough to grab after a shift, you'll be fine.

Some autos seem to put down much less power when using nitrous because they weren't built from the factory to hold that much more torque/power. The torque converter will start to slip and you won't be accelerating. Most of the time, a couple of small upgrades will do the trick, but on a truck, I don't think you'll have to worry about the upgrades since they were built to handle heavy loads.
