Default SRT-10 FIPK's

A long running debate with SRT-10 guys has been whether the SnakeOyl (Green) FIPK is any better than the K&N FIPK (which costs twice as much).

I had been running the SnakeOyl FIPK on my car almost since day-one. I chose the SnakeOyl unit since it was cheap (like me). A few weeks ago, I had an opportunity to pick up a used K&N FIPK for only $80 so I jumped on it (normally it sells for $300).

Results are in. The K&N seems to pull really strong and there’s no doubt I’ve lost nothing vs. the Green system and probably gained some. It pulls really strong but it’s hard for me to tell how much “better” it is vs. the Green. Part of my problem is that prior to running my car today with the K&N, I hadn’t run my car WOT for about 2 months. Maybe I just forgot how strong it pulls – or maybe it’s the K&N – who knows.

Anyway – I’d love to talk to anyone who thinks the SRT-10 K&N system “fits” correctly. In terms of fit, it’s the biggest piece of junk I’ve ever installed on any car. You had better have lots of patience and lots of foam tape to seal the area where the clamshell meets the K&N snorkel. If you run without the clamshell, then it’s a moot point however, I feel the clamshell is critical for giving you the “ram-air” effect it was designed for in conjunction with the functional hood scoop.

Anyway, I’ll probably keep the K&N on because I believe it’s stronger than the Green but it’s a shame that I have to use foam tape to make it work right. I would expect more from K&N – especially for $300.

They (west coast viper) put k&ns in my 2004 viper, and it ran "cleaner" and more responsive. For my 06 I told them to have some K&ns ready for the 06 and they said they would put "greens" in it. So this is for monday, we''ll see how they work

I also have a set of greens along with a smooth tube. They seem to work well.

My only real complaint about the K&N is the big air gap between the clam shell and the snorkel. It's just plain wrong and is a piss-poor design. The gap can be sealed with foam tape but I don't like the idea of having to tape my car together.

When we installed the K&N on the Viper we did not have this problem... it installed perfect.

Could this might be the reason why they sold it cheaper to you?

Either K&N or SRT would have had to perform a redesign within the last few months or else you have the same problem and just don't realize it.

Issue is at this joint right here. The K&N is smaller than stock and leaves a gap where air rushing in from the hood scoop can escape into the engine area rather than being forced into the air filters.

I know about Viper Alley but never get over there.

Yesterday I bought a stainless one from RSI. A bit pricey ($590) but it'll be a good poser mod.

The only REAL way would be to dyno with one and dyno with the other against the factory one. But since you claim to be "cheap" that's probably out of the question. Nothing tells it like it is like a dyno.

People who aren't cheap have done tests on a dyno and saw about 17whp with the K&N. That's the one I run for everyday use but it's the fugliest.

The RSI piece is the $hits but it's all show - no go. It did help me win another car show trophy on 12 November. It was a Judges Choice Award at the Import vs. Domestic show at MIR
