OK so recently I have been having issues with my SRT trying to start if the car is warmed up and I turn it off it will not start again. I have to get jumped I have replaced the batteries 3 times this month all brand new ones I have no battery light I start the car when its cold it struggles the batteries last about 4 days to 1week before the issue starts. I have started the car and used my multimeter on the battery and reading 14.1-14.2 so I believe the alternator is good. The only thing is I'm using a resistor in the battery temp sensor plug but it has been like since I got the car 5 years ago. The problem started when I had a short in the car the old battery wire on the positive side got a hole in it and shorted on the manifold somehow and I replaced the wires but the only thing I could get were a lot thicker then stock sized wires could this be the problem? Or am I missing something. When it has the weak start my headlights DO NOT dim down everything seems normal the radio doesn't cut off the interior lights dont dim which means the battery should be fine but going through 3 brand new batteries and its only bad and needs a jump after the car is warmed up...what could this be am I missing something?
Also just tried starting the car it went weak then nothing but if I hold the key I could smell a burning smell but no smoke still can't see any type of burn marks or damage
OK well I was just messing with the car there is a resistance somewhere you can feel a strong surge through the main power wire. And if you turn the key off and on fast it will eventually start like it has full power. So now I have to find the problem wire any suggestions? On where to look?
My battery shorted too and I have a similar problem. The car drives fine and starts fine cold, but if it starts warm it starts weak. Not like it turns over and starts hard, but as if the starter is having a hard time starting(kind of like when the battery is dying). I tested the battery and alternator, both checked out. Replaced the battery anyway, same thing. I think it's the starter as I checked all fuses and all is fine. Let me know what you find OP. Did this start soon after the short to the battery?
Yea my problem started after the short and now its starting to do it when its cold but if I bump the key a few times it will eventually start strong cold or hot
I have been out of town just got back car will not start lights don't dim it clicked a few times then nothing at all I tapped the started with a wooden brook handle and it will faintly click 1-2 times then nothing again so it has to be the starter I haven't done a positive load test yet but I figured for $100 just get a new starter and that way I know its done and good
No I will try that but one thing when I did the cranking test with the volt meter I could hear the starter click loudly and I used a socket and could spin the crank so the motor is not frozen
If you have jump cables you can bypass the cables to determine whether its negative or positive cabling.
Start with the negative side.
Run jumpers from battery negative to engine block.
I have left over brand new negative battery cables from the auto parts store I have about 1.5' of solid cable left I'm going to bolt in a better area on the block and update in a few minutes now if this works then where would I look at the problem? My battery negative cable is on the chassis on bare metal brand new with new terminals and solid connects
OK got it regrounded and starts better then it ever did but since that fixed it there must be a problem with grounding else where. Where would that be? Because it was fine without having to jump it to the block
