A standard 2.4 will not work, you need the turbo model. There is no 06' SRT-4. The vehicle was built 03-05, three years, that's it. I believe the GT Cruiser turbo engine will also work, however there are differences in the manifolds and I believe a couple other areas. Some others can provide some more info on this.

Any of the 2.4L turbo out of the Neon SRT-4 (not Caliber) or any of the turbo PT Cruiser will work. If you go with a PT Cruiser there are some minor overall differences like intake manifold and off memory a couple small items like thermostat housing but internals are identical. If you plan to build an engine with aftermarket internals you can use some of the short blocks from the naturally aspirated 2.4L (preferably '03+ off memory as I think that's when they switch to using the same reinforced "turbo" block casting for all applications) but the naturally aspirated blocks weren't drilled for the piston oil squirters and turbo drain-back tube. With how common the turbo PT Cruiser engines are getting at the self-serve junkyards that's probably your best bet if you're looking for something to rebuild (or if you're lucky, you find one in working condition).

Eric H. - '04 Neon SRT-4 (eBlue/S2) - '04 SRT-4 (blk/stock & now sold)
'92 Dodge Daytona IROC R/T --- -- '91 Dodge Spirit R/T
plus a couple other turbo Dodges, a Cobalt, a couple Focus, big S/C wagon, and some other stuff...

Yes, I believe the turbo oil feed line is different too (it's U shaped) and won't clear the Neon hood either. Throttle body is also a no go. But if you're just in for a long block then it works fine.

Any pictures of the top and side of this PT engine? Googled and some looks close and it is the same but then I see the heagasket or short block and it looks off.

The Caliber SRT-4 was built later, 2008-2009, with the 2.4 L World I4 turbo "Warhawk" engine (which should have been put in a Dart SRT-4 but that's an entirely different discussion).

The GT Cruiser uses the same engine as the Neon SRT-4, with minor differences. It was not based on the Caliber engine in any way as the Caliber SRT-4 was developed and built later.

hey thanks guy i got the 07 PT GT engine comming, a lil pricey but i dont mind paying for the peace of mind and from a certified wreckers that said they will test the engine before shipping. Comes with turbo too. everythign said n done shipped to my work was 1200Canadian and the engine itself has 120xxxkms on it wich is fairly low. Aside from that everyone else wants 2 to 3000can for these engines below 100xxxkms so i swooped on this one as fast as i could. plus ill have my old engine now to build :p

Now since its out of a PT GT what parts will i need to swap that wont work in the srt4 i know all the major stuff like but are is there anythign else? i was told the turbo cooler lines woudnt fit also:
-thermostat housing
-intake manifold
-throttle body

It will be pretty straight forward once you have it in hand, so don't worry about that.

It's not the cooler line that wont fit but the Turbo oil line. The PT Cruiser one is U shaped and apparently won't clear the Neon's firewall.

You can clearly see it here:

If that PT or any engine has been sitting for a while, spray a little oil in the sparkplug holes and turn by hand first, make sure the rungs are not rusted or stuck to the walls.
