So what about the tranny? would it fit like a bolt on? just like a plug and play?
Let's say I have the srt 4 and want to put the engine from a PT GT, would it be a exact replacement? even the wiring is the same?

There are many threads discussing this if you look in the engine section. The short answer is the engine is essentially identical except for the intake manifold and some accessories that bolt to it being different as well as the t-stat housing. A PT Cruiser turbo engine from either the "lite" turbo or GT models will work perfectly for a replacement in an SRT-4 as long as you still have the old engine from the SRT-4 to use for things like the intake manifold that are different.

The transmissions are different and won't interchange between the two cars. The automatic was never offered in the SRT-4 and they use different manual transaxles (the New Venture/New Process T-850 in the SRT-4 and a Getrag G288 in the PT GT).

you need a 2003 and up ptgt engine

the engine from the ptgt up to 2002 as some difference from the later model

There wasn't a GT or turbo version in 2002. The turbocharged GT model was new for 2003 just like the SRT-4 but came out much earlier in the model year. As long as it come from a turbo PT Cruiser is will work fine.
