Smoking issue

Ok a little info. 50 trim turbo with fuel mods, tune fbo etcc

One morning I went to start my car and noticed it was smoking alot, white smoke as what I can see. My first thought was head gasket. Drained oil and looked fine.

Put new oil in and drove it. After driving it it seemed the smoke went away or not as much as it did at start up. Once it warmed up it stopped and smoked a little out of the turbo area. Now the turno seems fine. No shaft play and no oil leakage anywhere.

Compression test came back on the lower side but was 120 across all 4. Cylinder 1 was a littlw off but not much

Does this sound like a valve seal problem? Only smokes bad on cold starts and after it warms very little to none

I also run a gutted pcv to a vented catch can. I since then bought a new pcv an ran it like a stock setup would for a day and still same symptoms

Heres a couple videos.

I should mention at startup there is a lot of water coming out of exhaust. More then normal and second video is about 30 mins of driving after

I do have the head off now and a new built head ready to go on. Just dont want to dig in to the bottom end if I dont have too

Rings, maybe oil rings specifically or the turbo seals. Yes, it could be the valve stem seals as well. How does the plugs look?

If it was turbo seal would it do it all the time? Not just on warm up?

The plugs didn't look bad from what I seen. I guess I can drop the oil pan and take the pistons out to see if the rings are bad

Garage
If it is the turbo seal I would imagine it only smokes when cold due to tolerance changes maybe? After it warms up, the expansion helps the seal do its job. Early signs of the seal going out. Someone correct me if I'm wrong lol. Also if you already have the head off isn't there a way to put something like oil on top of the valves? If I remember correctly if the seals around the valves are bad than oil should leak past in a certain amount of time. Something along those lines lol

The less invasive way of checking is to use a bore scope or pull the exhaust and intake manifolds to look at the back of the valves. If the valve seals are leaking it becomes pretty obvious then.

If you have to go that far to drop the oil pan, check the cylinder walls too and if they are good, think about refreshing the rings and bearings. Visually inspect for any signs of potential problem areas on the bearing surfaces.

Thanks for the info. On the turbo, any oil leakage from early stages? I didnt see none. Hate to replace a bunch of stuff and be something as simple as a turbo seal.

Technically a turbo seal would require a rebuild of the turbo, not so simple actually.

Did you have him check this one before you put it in or get any input from him?
