So I was at the track tonight and just couldn't hook up. Track was prepped pretty well, but I was on some street tires (no burnouts). Needless to say, I had lots of nasty wheel hop in first and lots of wheel spin in second and third.
I had a particularly nasty 1st gear on one run and I believe it is when I snapped the two vertical upper motor mount bolts (see pic). Nobodies fault but my own. I should know better by now.
Anyway, I know Modern Performance had some sort of upgraded motor mount bolt kit on their website. Does anyone know if it contains these bolts? If so, is it a worth while kit to purchase? Are there any better alternatives out there. I'll have to either hit up the dealer or hardware store to grab some temp replacements...but want to come up with a better long term solution.
That and maybe a driver mod too. lol
BTW: I was luck and while the motor was still hot, I was able to twist out the broken bolt ends...(thank the Lord).
I would almost bet they worked them selves loose. I broke those 2 the one that goes across from them and the one in the 4th mount below them. And the other day i checked one of my mpx ones and it was bent beacuse i was loose.
I would just get the MPx bolts, it will probably be less of a hassle than trying to get them from Dodge, they would probably give you the wrong ones 3 times before you finally get them. I have had those MPx bolts in my car for about 2 years with no issues and my mounts have had to come off for various maintenance jobs and gone back in with no problems
These bolts are 11.5 in hardness. They are pretty strong.
I broke mine a while ago WOT shifting from 3rd to 4th. A local shop told me that softer bolts will handle the flex and not break as easily. IDK if there's any truth to that but I just replaced them with stock bolts. Never had any problems since, but I don't WOT shift anymore, not after breaking my IS.
Yeah, I got in 8 runs that night. Nothing worth writing home about. I couldn't get any traction really. Best 1/8th mile of the night was only 9.6.
I had to really baby 1st & 2nd so as not to spin/wheel hop. I was still spinning in 3rd when I mashed the pedal as well. My 60s were a consistant 2.4 when I didn't wheel hop the crap outta my car.
I was disappointed overall with the entire night.
It was my first time out this year on this set up running an older set of KDWs.
But at least I got out....even if I did run into issues (see my other thread FUEL DUMP).
dude just get slicks i ran first time out on mine see thread took my 5431e. And they make the biggest diffence. I picked up a set of 15x6 vw rims the aluminum 5 spokes. they are a lot lighter than steel ones and you can get them for nothing from the vw croud.
Well, I ended up going to the local hardware store and grabbed a couple of 8.8 bolts (strongest they had, equal to a 5.5 grade American bolt). Bolts are 10mm x 1.5 std thread x 60mm long + washer
I'll have to drop these in temporarily until the new ones from Modern arrive.
And 03RedSRT4 - which ones are 11.5 in hardness? Stock ones or Modern upgraded ones? Never heard of that grade/harness. I thought the metric bolt grades were 8.8, 10.9 (which is equal to a Grade 8 in American bolts), and 12.9s? But I'm no bolt guru.... lol
Thanks again for the help guys! Hopefully I can keep from shearing these off again.
Here is a pic of the broken bolts for your viewing pleasures...
I know these tend to back out. And i think it was loose becuse when i broke mine the ends that were in the metalblock came right out so i know they were loose. Plus then i was working on my car 2 days ago i had to remove the upper mount the mpx bolt was bent because it was loose. You need to lock tight the shit out of these.
Well, it was likely a mix of loose bolts and lots of wheel hop at the track that sheared them off. lol
And to how much HP I have.... I'm sure I'm maxing out my 50 trim. So roughly about 400-420, but its just a guess until I actually dyno it.
But enough to break things like this. Wheel hop is a killer.
Ended up ordering the Modern kit today. Going to pick the the ones linked from Fastenall as well, but noticed those were 5mm longer - I don't want them to bottom out and not tighten up properly, but I did like the 12.9 grade on those. Guess we'll see if the Modern kit holds up to my abusive launches...or maybe I'll get smart and buy some slicks.
yea I'd say they probably rattled loose and snapped. Just make sure you get some thread locker on them this time around and periodically give them a check. It's not something common so you should be able to avoid it happening again
I had a bunch of stuff powdercoated and its quite possible that things were not fully torqued when we reassembled everything. Hope I've learned my lesson.
Solid torque struts make everything rattle more, if you aren't checking things regularly you're asking for trouble. This likely wouldn't happen with the stock torque struts.
When you say "torque struts" do you mean motor mounts?
And yeah, with all solid mounts and no BS assembly, it does get a bit more "rattlely". Gotta keep a better eye on it, unlike my daily driver.
Up until this year, the car hasn't seen a lot of road use (low mileage original, it still has under 8,000 miles on it) as I've been constant working on it since I got it in 04. I'll certainly be double checking things more often now that I've been driving it more frequently.
There's only 1 motor mount on the car, I don't know why people started calling the torque struts motor mounts. As 1Lap said all they do is keep the engine from twisting. You could remove both of them and nothing would change except the engine would rock a lot more.
just a heads up.. it isnt the bolts failing that is the cause.. The cause is the top mount the bolts screw into. If yours is aluminum which i bet it is that is your cause. The aluminum mounts have a cone shaped bottom that allow the mount to flex.
Well, I had mine powdercoated a year or so ago, so I won't be able to tell by color or rust. lol
I'll toss a magnet on it, check out the pics of it while it was off, or just remove it and check.
I should mention that I purchased the MPX kit and have no issues with it for the most part. I did notice at the track, when I did a launch with lots of wheel hop (don't worry, it only happened twice) that the bolts would loosen themselves up a bit.
Fixing that with a bit of red loctite.
But yeah, I appreciate the tip. Those cones leave a lot of wiggle room. Crazy

I think the bolt it self isnt backing out of the hole so much as it stretches the bolt then when it is looe it may backout.. that bolt is sooo long and it only grams the top of the bolt.. I would be afraid to use loctite just incase the bolt breaks will makeit real hard to get the broken one out. I have sold a couple of mount because they couldnt ge the bolts out and i bet it sucks bad to have to pull that mount while it is in the car:crying:
