I love this question because there is actually a WEALTH of knowledge regarding the process.
This video REALLY helps so give it a look, below I'll give you my summary of the key points:
Bucket prep:
Car Wax, Car Polish, Auto Detail Supplies - Bucket Preperation
Actual wash:
Car Wax, Car Polish, Auto Detail Supplies - Bucket Preperation
Grip guard-
--BEST way to avoid swirl marks
Adam's Car Wash Soap-
--Completely neutral so it won't damage the paint.
It isn't a 2 bucket method as much as it's a 2 pad method if you are using the grill guard. With the 2 pad method, you allow the "resting pad" to settle in the bucket, getting cleaner as it sits. Switch out between reaches for more suds. SUDS ARE KEY.
Be sure to have your MF towels ready to go as the longer the water sits, the more of a chance to get water spots (

)
Before you dry, give the car a quick shot of detail spray. This will help the process.
