WHen cleaning the engine bay with simple green do i need to cover any wires or anything with spraying it down? I know to cover an open air filter. But how about wires or plugs?

Nope, just the air filter. Let soak for about 10 minutes then spray off with a hose thoroughly. I usually let the alternator dry out before I go driving afterwords, but that's just me.
I would not use the CD2 on a DIRTY engine. Thats like spraying tire wet on dirty tires.
Thoroughly clean first, then dress the engine.
When I washed my engine I actually removed the intake (covered the turbo inlet). This allowed for more cleaning coverage. I sprayed Simple Green in every crevice liberally and let it dwell for 10 minutes. Sprayed again and agitated with an assortment of brushes. Then hosed off with a power washer while keeping the wand moving and not letting heavy water rush in any certain area. Especially around the injectors.
I used a leaf blower to blow most of the water puddling in various areas of the engine bay. Then started engine and let it run for 20 minutes with hood shut. This evaporated all the water.
This was last summer. If you look at my engine now it looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years. Is it me or do the Neon engine bays just attract dust and dirt like crazy? I do park outside 24-7 so the moisture that gets in there doesn't help.
My engine was very dusty. The CD2 melted it away and brought silicone look to plastic. That's what it's for. If it's grease it recommends to clean that first. But dusty is fine. I'm gonna do my truck. It's frickin dusty nasty !! I'll do before and after pics and see how it does. The car isn't driven so it was just winter storage dust.
Looks great now. And no work. And still looks nice. So if ya ain't tried it don't knock it. I only bought it because of rave reviews and ease of use with no water.
Dusty is not the same as DIRTY which I specifically underlined in previous post.
A dirty engine such as grease, dirt, grime should be cleaned FIRST using an engine degreaser or all purpose degreaser. THEN use the CD2 as your dressing step. The results will turn out better.

Sorry...just making sure your semantics were clear for everyone. But I'll say my truck motor was pristine 2 years ago. But dusty or ? ..it still looks dirty as all get out. But no hanging grease or oil drips. We'll see how it does. As soon as this humidity dies down a bit.
so i just cleaned the engine bay and my intake manifold and valve cover still look like crap. I sprayed the simple green MAX on and scrubbed it and hosed it off because it was strating to dry (about 100 degrees out).

Was your engine in the sun? If so put it in a shade.
Was your engine hot? If so it needs to be totally cold. It only needs to be "slightly" warm but letting it run for 2 minutes so that you can still put your hand on the motor.
A corroded valve cover (which is common with ours) will not look like new after just degreasing alone. Try scrubbing it liberally with a wire brush.
The intake manifold will require a special cleaner because of its cast pores which dirt and grime cake into.
The Eagle One Etching Mag Cleaner is made specifically for this. Make sure to use a stiff nylon brush to scrub it in.
Just to touch upon the effectiveness of the Eagle One Etching Mag cleaner, here is what it did to the stock wheels. As you know, the inside barrel is rough cast aluminum. The cleaner just dissolved the dirt/grime with very little scrubbing effort.

The engine was hot from siting outside that about it. I will try that stuff next time. I looked for that cd2 cleaner stuff but couldnt find it at advanced auto
I did the truck real quick this afternoon. I did nothing but wire brush stuff off battery terminals. Hasn't been touched in 2.5 yrs. Sprayed it..let set for 20 minutes. And then drive for 20 minutes and then wipe off excess.
Before...
After,,,wiped excess with paper towel..wasn't the best idea..LOL !!
