holy ass.
do NOT use ANY kind of sandpaper on your car. you might think 2-3000 grit is high enough but take my word for it, it is not. your best bet is an electric random orbital buffer and some scratch removing compound.

Agreeded, dont not attemp any wet sanding, no need for that at all. Use a buffter with a foam pad (wool pads can b a bitch on dark colours cause they can leave swirls) with some light compound or some fine scratch remover (as posted above), I have always had great sucess with Meguiars Scratch X.

Ya, don't wet sand...you have to know what you're doing, proper pressure...to much pressure and you'll eat off to much clear. A guy at my old work did it for me after my car was painted...it gets out any small imperfections, and small trash deposits.

If you want the paint to look better than new then its best that you hire a local detailer to polish your paint. It takes a lot of skill and the correct products to remove swirls. There is a detailing forum that you can post to find local mobile detailers. Do your research on them and look for pictures of their work. It could cost anywhere from $250-$300 for an exterior job depending on the severity, to which they will evaluate.

Otherwise, if you want to settle for "good" and are ok with a small improvement in the appearance you can invest in a random orbital polisher and use an over the counter polish that is meant to safely remove light swirls.
