could always try a cloth diaper, there a lil smoother then microfiber. as far as scratches maybe some uber fine like 3000 grit wetsand and then polish it with some mothers mag and alum polish. havent really had to do that yet on mine so someone else might wanna chime in if that sounds right.

The mothers mag polish worked well on mine. I didn't have scratches but it made a diff.

I wouldn't be so quick to blame the towels.

If you dry wipe the chrome lip that is dirty you are prone to scratches.

If the wheels are lightly dusty, mist the mf towels with a QD spray and then wipe.

I agree. Towels CAN be a culprit which is why I suggest Microfiber for everything, but starting with a clean surface is key. Don't forget you can always clay bar rims to get embedded brake dust out of the nooks and crannies.

Our Metal Polish 1 is a great cleaner. Our Metal Polish 2 is the actual shine, always use on cool to the touch clean rims to prevent scratching. Microfiber as always!
