Default Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger Headed to NASCAR in 2010

Forget the Fusion and Avenger, the 2010 Ford and Dodge NASCAR racers will be mean street machines and real pony cars. That's right, the Mustang and Challenger.

Both cars are expected to be closer to stock than any car in recent history, but that's not saying much.

The move was made by the NASCAR governing body in an effort to help the series. In the past both GM and Ford warned that the current Cup cars would turn NASCAR into a spec-racing series with every car not only being similar but looking the same. This, they argued, would in turn lead to a lack of brand identification and, therefore, a loss of interest in the series.

It seems they were right.

NASCAR has suffered a significant drop in not only attendance figures and souvenir sales, but also in TV ratings - indicating that the problem is in fact a lack of interest and not a lack of funds.

The new cars actually won't be all that different, but they will look different, something that NASCAR is most likely hoping will be of interest to manufacturers looking to capitalize on some marketing.

Despite the move by Ford and Doge, GM will continue to run the Impala rather than the 2010 Camaro. Also, Toyota is continuing on with its Camry, mostly because it doesn’t have anything else. The sole Japanese automaker in NASCAR recently dropped the two-door Solara from its lineup.

ehhh...so, whats gonna happen to Trans Am racing? Speed World Challenge GT/ST series? I think its a great idea to have 'real' cars running in left hand circles, but as long as it doesn't affect the other, better racing series.

I think it'll be a minor improvement, but the cars will still have to meet aero specs that will have to be close to identical for NASCAR to inspect them so it won't make that much difference.

I don't think they'd ever go back to using "street" cars again in nascar. There's no "stock" left in it. New body shapes would be nice, and basing them on cars that are logitudinal V8 powered, rear wheel drive, is good. Meh, still gets kinda boring, though. Restrictor plates make any super speedway kinda boring. They should limit them with drag, not horsepower. Make them stick to the track better with more downforce, and allow more HP.

I watch it once in a while, but I sure as heck won't be giving them my money. They've priced it out of the range i'm willing to pay. I'll go to a local dirt track.

Factory body shapes like they had back in the day without a doubt is cool and all but with the level of competition like it is and the millions and millions of dollars some of these teams put towards their effort IMO its more ideal to have everycar in essence...equal (with the exceptions I'm about to mention).

Take a look at the new C.O.T car's .....all same shape and dimensions as the next guy. That's 1 factor out the window when it comes to making all the car equal and unbiased in the aerodynamic side of things. The only thing that sets them aside from each other are the headlight decals, number on the side, and emblem in the middle.

I would say its safe to say that in general all the motors are the same being that they all have to be built to spec just with their engine manufacturers parts..

NASCAR try's to ensure that all the cars are equal in every way shape or form thus allowing the actual racing to boil down to the driver and tuning (motor, carb, suspension, tire pressure, etc)... this is where those valued crew members, spotters, driver, and crew cheif come into play as its ALL on them. NASCAR looks at it as let the better team when.

Everything you said is why i quit watching.....its become to main stream and more about money than competition. Not to mention they pull these kids out of the nationwide series way to soon....they haven't payed there dues so to speak in my opinion
