Dodge unloads the 300-hp Caliber SRT-4

Our minds are still reeling at the thought of pushing 300-hp through the front wheels of an “econobox” to comment too much on the new Dodge Caliber SRT-4. It’s quite frankly mind boggling, though not that surprising from the speed freaks at Dodge’s SRT division.

According to Dodge, four numbers are important when contemplating the significance of the Caliber SRT-4: 85, 125, 300 and 260. Eighty-five represents how much more horsepower the Caliber SRT-4 has than the Neon SRT-4 it replaces, which means it produces 125 hp per liter of displacement with a total output of 300 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Umm… wow. Just wow.

The prodigious amount of power provided by the turbocharged 2.4L VVT “World Engine” is chopped up and served by a six-speed manual and delivered via the front wheels, which has to be one scary fun sub-six-second ride to 60.

The company says in its release that the mission of SRT is to provide benchmark performance for the best price, so we’ll be eager to find out later today what that means in terms of dollars and cents. Either way, the first shocker of the 2006 Chicago Auto Show goes to Dodge.

Frankly I'm a bit pissed off.... Now I for sure have to mod to keep up... Makes you wonder why The Srt-4 "Neon" did'nt come w/300hp on tap... I guess it all depends on the msrp.. and what the platform does on the streets after its released.... But If I pull up to a light and one of those takes me... I might just have to trade up... Only time will tell...

If AWD is available (R/T), why didn't they make the SRT4 Caliber AWD to make better use of the 300hp on the street? I mean, having FWD is great over AWD if you are just doing a lot of highway racing, but lower speed racing the AWD would be nice to have to eliminate traction issues.

WTF FWD!! and the R/T with AWD. Hmmm, I smell an engine swap, or probably more likely a Challenger.

I'll admit that this srt-4 version of the caliber looks better but having that much power to a FWD car is getting crazy. I wonder if they are going to use some type of control system like stage 2 with toys.

Not Bad, Not Bad...

I saw an R/T when i was up at the detroit show. they're pretty decent looking in person. I'm a little dissapointed at the lack of AWD, especially since an AWD trans is available for the platform. Will the extra 70 hp make me trade my car in? i dont think so. unless these cars are siginificantly faster than ours, or the 6th gear makes a huge difference in highway crusing, i'll be keeping my neon. I like the fact that they only made ~2500 of my car, it makes me feel special

I remember the days of...

...most of you weren't born yet.
