Default Wheel spacer bs?

A while back I had discount tire put on some new tires up front...I had 3mm spacers on at the time just for some extra clearance. Immediately after getting the tires put on around 75mph I would get a nice shake from the steering wheel. I brought it back the next day and they blamed it on the spacers...it hadn't done it prior though They "rebalanced" the tires and took off the spacers and everything was back to normal...They are the 3mm's from modern...ideas? I haven't tried them again since.

I'm gonna guess they f'd up the balancing the first time.
Easy to check though, put the spacers back on and see if you still get the shake.

Now, FYI if you don't NEED the spacers for fitment issues don't use 'em. Frankly, I wouldn't use spacers at all, but rather find the proper offset for the wheels.

Exactly, don't use something that you don't need.

The spacers could also not be machined properly so they might not be perfectly flat.

i had the same problem with the shakes, took it to have the tires rebalanced and left the spacers on. everything is just fine now

yeah how can you run them without the spacers?? that alone sez you dont need them. I assume you want them just for looks & I strongly disagree with that notion. spacers are bad. 3mm aint much, but if you need them for caliper clearance then you have no choice. but you arent gonna notice that by sight if that is your intention.

like the other guy said- put em back on & if your trbl rears its ugly head again than you know they are bad. they may have gotten bent or somethin while they were off the car.

I didn't get the spacers for looks...they are to keep the tires from sometimes hitting the bottom side of the perch under turns and going over potholes.

The wheel and tire move in unison with the strut. That is how the suspension works. You won't ever get rubbing from a tire on the strut when the suspension compresses.

Not likely that a "bend" would give you issues. Tightening the lugs down to 90lbs. will flatten a 3mm spacer just fine. The issue may me a shitty casting of the spacer (i.e. inconsistent thickness).

prob not, but if it was shitty casting, then it woulda been givin him fits before the tire store took them off also.

shademg,

It looks like you have HP Evo's on your ride. How wide spacers did you use and where did you purchase them from if you don't mind sharing? I just bought HP Evo's from a friend and bought 3mm spacers from a local wheel and tire shop.

Had the wheels balanced with said spacers on but I'm still getting some shaking at high speeds. I'm just thinking if I should use different spacers.

Thanks.

i have 5 mm spacers on the front and 3mm on the rear<dont really need the rears though>also had to hollow out the centercap to fit them!!! i have no shaking up to at least 90 or more, got the wheels as a package with nexen tires from wheelfire.com, pretty good deal

Did they decide that you needed 5mm in front and 3mm in the back? Or is this something you requested?

Thanks.

no, wheelfire sent me 3mm spacers for all four, i had so much trouble getting the fronts to fit with the centercaps i had to go to 5mm in the front and i just kept the 3mm in the rear,,,the toughest part was hollowing out the middle of the centercap, the dremel tool became my bestfriend
