Almost any tire designed for a 17" wheel from these companies is going to be too tall to fit on the car, regardless of wheel width.

M/T does make a ET Street Radial in 205 / 40R17 which equals 24 X 8.50 R17.This is the same size tire that was on my car when I bought it so I know they fit. BFG and some others also make this size. See links below.

BFGoodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial

MUST be used on a 7" wide wheel

it's short

it's skinny

not a good choice.

Tire Specs for BFGoodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radial

look at the specs. 7-8" recommended rim width. the very short sidewall will be pinched in bad trying to go on a 6" wheel. Also note the load rating of only 992lbs. That's at 30+ psi. Drop that down to drag racing levels and it's even less. An average SRT-4 has right at 1000lbs on each front tire, and we know there's not a whole lot you can do to remove weight on the front of the car. All of the facts say a 205/40-17 is not safe to use on an SRT-4, especially one on stock 17x6 wheels.

They were talking about the 205 et street not the bfgs. I'm sure they will fit fine on the stock 17x6 wheel being that my 225/45 bfg drs fit the stock wheel fine, but a 205/40 is tiny. I dont see it hooking worth a shit. I ran 235/60/15 et streets for a while and they didnt hook from a 2nd gear roll, I could imagine what a 205/40 on a 17" would do. No sidewall at all to that tire.
