So i know its said to be impossible, but what about with a spacer? Currently running an 8.5 wide wheel with a 10mm spacer and no problems whatsoever. Yes i have extended studs.
In the market for new wheels and looking to squeeze out that extra .5 of an inch.
What do you think? Gonna work? What offset should i order? 35?
Does it matter if i do 17 or 18?

There are only a handful of off the shelf 9" wide wheels in a 5x100 bolt pattern with an offset close enough to keep the wheel inline with the fender.
Its better to fit a wheel with a higher offset that way you can play with the fitment by adding the appropriate spacer to get it just right.
A wheel with too low of an offset will result in a wheel that sticks out well past the fenders. And there isn't anything you can do to correct it except for having the wheel hub machined to remove material to bring the wheel in. Basically increasing the offset. But this is costly and is an extreme route to take.
A few more to add later. So much for my previous comment about only being a handfull out there...lol
What about a 15" wheel? I have a set of 10" slicks I need to get mounted up and really don't care about how far they stick out past the wheel well. I have not been able to find a 9 or 10" wheel for this application (must not be looking hard enough). Any advise?
As you have already figured out, 17x9 or 18x9 will be a tough fitment. There is probably not going to be much of a chance of fitting that size wheels without hitting the coilover (with wheel and/or tire) or having the wheel/tire stick out past the fender. Best bet is to do the measurements and see what backspacing (offset) would get you closet. Then you can work on the finding the proper wheel/spacer combination or have a set of custom wheels made. Also could flare the fenders (or buy flared fenders).
Also, check out VW Vortex. The early 2000 VW's used 5x100 and those guys have gotten really creative on wheels. Including spacers that convert your 5x100 into a 5x114.3 setup which has more wheel offset options.
All this is making the assumption that you want to go to a wider than 245 tire. If not, best to stick with 17x8 or 18x8 wheel.

This is totally true... assuming you have know idea how to measure anything and dropped out of school in third grade...
I'm glad to see someone with enough balls to get some wheels that fit.. to OP just make sure you measure everything carefully (measure twice.. and cut.. er order wheels once) and good luck! Let's see some pics when you get them in!!!
