225/45 BFG G-force sport on stock rims for about a year then I recently changed to 215/45 595 Federal. I had NO problems with 225/45s or the 215/45 but I only STREET RACE!!!!!!! Any other time I drive like a 90 year old man so Ive never had the floting experence. I know that tires that are verified in EUROPE are wider than the same size verified in the USA

if you wouldn't just slap the tires on and go with the stock psi on these wider tires than your sidewall would not "squish." the wider the tire the more air you will need to carry the proper load. read the side wall of the tire says xxxx load @ XX psi usually this is the maximum air the tire can hold.

Ok read through all these threads and saw one guy ask a retorical question I guess about fitting a 235/45/17 tire on a 17x7 rim. can this be done without hurting handling capabilities much? I mostly race straightline, but do enjoy the every once in awhile spirited drive through the curving country roads.

I have rims with a 45 offset, no clearance issues on the calipers and I have BC coilovers so no perches to worry about rubbing.

I am looking at going with either the BFG KDW2's or the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 tires on these 17x7 rims. I would like to get as wide of a tire as possible with keeping handling issue to a minimum. I know a 225 will fit no problem but if I can get the 235 on there without an issue I would rather do that.

Thanks guys.

it is not safe to mount a 235/45 on a 7" rim. it needs a 7.5" wide rim. Also, with that offset, you'll be VERY close to the strut body, even with coilovers. Get an extreme performance 225/45 tire for the best traction with your wheels.

Gotcha, thanks Stowaway. Any recommendations on tires?

I am looking at the 225/45 Goodyear F1 GS-D3's, BFG KDW2's, or the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R.

out of those, the re-01r. but the best (short of the BFG drag radial) will be the falken azenis RT-615.

Yeah I wanted the falken azenis, but I am having a hard time trying to find a place that will ship via USPS to an APO box overseas. Tirerack.com atleast ships to them and has your tires to you in like 2 weeks. I wanted to go through edgeracing for rims and tires (they have the Falkens there) so I could get a nice combo for about $800-900. But emailed them on Sunday and still haven't heard from them if they would be willing to assist with this request.

So I might have to go with the re-01r's for the moment then and then get the falkens when I get back to the states next year and buy some new rims. how is the tread life with the re-01r's? decent? or am I going to have to replace them in 6000 miles.

As long as I can get say about 15k out of them I will be happy. only $540 for them

either the RT-615 or the re-01r will get 12-15k miles out of a set under normal driving.

hmmmm, Falken doesn't sell the RT-615 in Europe.........

Contact Discount Tire Direct, they ship to APO. They have them in stock right now too, for $127 each.

I am sure they do, but it is $2+ to the pound at the moment. It would cost me less probably to buy them from the states, pay for shipping mounting and balancing than it would to get them over here. LOL

I will check that site out. If they will ship then I am sold. that mileage is perfect. I got all seasons on stock rims for the winter anyway.

it's not the width only that makes a tire fit or not, it's the width plus aspect ratio (sidewall height). a 235/40 needs an 8" wide wheel, a 235/45 needs a 7.5" wide wheel, and both fit on an srt-4 with stock suspension. A 235/50-17 can actually fit on a 6.5" wide rim, but is much too tall to fit on an SRT-4.

Will 215-45-17's work? It would only be a little shorter, right?

I really like the Nitto NeoGens but they don't come in a 50 series

Thanks!

no, and look at different tires. The Nitto's aren't that good in comparison to other tires on the market.
