225/45/17 on stock wheels - BE ALL AND END ALL THREAD
I'm sick of seeing these weed threads pop up every other day so this thread serves as the ONLY thread that I will allow this discussion to take place. All other threads even remotely close to this topic WILL BE DELETED.
This isn't rocket science so there is absolutely no reason to make this complicated. So lets begin...
Can a 225/45/17 be mounted on the stock 17x6 wheel?
YES.
Has anybody here mounted a 225/45/17 on the stock wheel?
YES.
Is it safe to mount a 225/45/17 on the stock wheel?
NO. The reason being is that a 225/45/17 is designed to mount on a minimum wheel width of 7". The stock wheel is 1 inch shorther in width which will cause the sidewalls to become pinched inwards causing a unstable sidewall. This unstability under load (when cornering) may cause the sidewall to "buck" or "roll" over the wheels rim edge quite possibly puncturing the tire and causing it to fail. This is not something you want happening traveling at a high speed.
Has anyone ever had a problem with a 225/45/17 on the stock wheel?
I remember reading about one person having a blowout but other than that no one has ever reported any issues.
Does a 225/45/17 give more grip and traction on the stock wheel?
It may offer a slight improvement in traction but handling will suffer due to the reasons mentioned above in regards to the sidewall.
If no one has ever had a problem with a 225/45/17 on the stock wheel, why is it such a bad idea?
Because being smart about upgrading is the most important thing. And trying to shoehorn a tire on a wheel that isn't supposed to be mounted on is not smart at all.
Can a 235 tire go on the stock wheel?
I'm sure it can be physically done but doing this is even more stupid.
but according to everyone else on here, who says that traction does not improve with the width of the tire, why do i even want to go with a 225. im going to go with a 175. its cheaper and will give me just as much grip

Installed 225/45/17 Kuhmo MX's on my stock rims about 2 weeks before Nationals. Drove 1300-1400 miles to Nat's, raced in every event at Nats. 4th in 4 cyl street tires class, 2nd in STU class autox, and a ton of full speed road course action. 10,000 miles since then and still not one problem.
Suggested to do............ not by me. Everyone has to make a choice as to what parts they put on there car. Poor or bad handling??? Hell no. These tires grip hella hard and there is no down side to the handling what so ever. But these are just my thoughts.
I will be upgrading to a 8" wide tire soon so i can run wider tires, but if i had to use the stock rims for Nat's again i will be running the same 225/45/17 Kumho's.

I must admit this was one of my first questions right after I got the car. It's a shame that Dodge left us with such small rims
89 shelby daytona 16 by 6 , 91 shelby daytona 16 by 6 , And my 05 srt-4 17 by 6, exactly when is dodge going to learn to give us at minimum a 7 in. wide wheel? This causes aftermarket wheel sale to rise and my wallet feeling empty. And I cant seem to find a 215/50/17 that I like. So I guess I will stick to my 205/50/17 brigestone re050a's that I am looking to buy.
so it's safe to say that a 235/40/17 tire will fit on a 17x7" wide rim eventhough that sized tire calls for a 8" wide rim....this is a rhetorical question...lol!
I have had a set of 225/45 toyo proxes 4 on for over 10000 miles and about 2 years. Yes the bulge a little, yes traction got better, and yes handling decreased in turns (car feels a little floaty). Also have seen signs of uneven wear. Dont know if over sized tire has something to do with that but firgued i would point it out. I wouldnt recomend it to anyone just for the fact i get nervous in some sharp turns because the thought of a blow out is always in the back of my mind. Just save and get a wider rim. Good sticky though.

I agree whole heartly with the first post. And I would like to add that even 215/45/17's cause a floaty very uncomfortable feel in my car. Why someone would put 225's on a 6" in rim dunno. Any just my $0.02
What's the widest tire we can safely fit on the donut?
