Then you're clearly missing the point of the program. The point is to get gas thirsty cars off the road, hence the complete disabling of the engines is said cars.
The whole program makes me S I C K.....lets take our tax $$$$ and give them to someone that CAN afford a new car!!! I CAN'T afford a new car. Half the clunkers are better cars than two of mine!
If the program was for fuel savings then give $4500 to people like me with 3 banger Geo Metros to let us keep our econo boxes on the road. My car was rated at 49mpg and with nearly 100 lbs of wt reduction gets 50-57 on a regular basis compared to the dumb ass Smart car that is rated at 40! It is lighter thyan the Geo, requires premium fuel, has the same size 3 banger, runs slower in the 1/4, room for two only, and a 6 spd tranny compared to my 5. It does have 87mph top end compared to my 86.

You need to take modern safety features into consideration when comparing the two. Those items can add a lot of weight to a vehicle of this size (proportionately). An accident in a Metro is almost guaranteed to kill you. I saw one get hit by a Nissan Sentra and it looked like a crumpled aluminum can, versus the Sentra that, while totaled, was far from unrecognizable. So it's pretty amazing that it still manages to do what the Metro did with a WHOLE LOT more safety built in.
