Too bad this thing is going to be expensive as shit. Can't imagine what would become of Tesla if it were to have gotten the same type of bailout money as doomed GM. These cars would actually be relatively affordable if there was enough of a demand for the parts by the car companies. Unfortunately as consumers, we can only get what we are offered for an affordable price even though this technology exists. Shame really

Priced around $60,000, capable of 240 miles on a single charge and producing no emissions, the Tesla Model S sedan will begin rolling off its new assembly line in California in late 2010. That’s only shortly after Chevy Volt’s scheduled mid 2010 production start date. Unlike the plug in Volt, the Model S will be fully electric. Tesla’s new factory will be located in San Jose and employ approximately 1,000 workers. Construction is expected to begin next summer. The Tesla Roadster will continue to be produced in England by Lotus, making the Model S Tesla’s first American-made vehicle.

Boy do I love Tesla!! I want to work for them someday hopefully.

Maybe at this rate, since the price keeps halving every five years or so, we will have a 25,000 electric vehicle for sale from them in 2014.

average car payment 400 a month
average gas expenditure 300 a month

....does a 50 grand car equate to 700 a month if it doesn't require fuel?

700x12monthsx5years = 42000

nope

...this is why we are still using combustable fuels. bring the price down to 35k and watch them fly out the door faster than you can say sliced bread.

EDIT: just had an epiphany. if that 700 billion was given to tesla, and the big 3 plants were all converted to build teslas in a saloon, minivan, compact and roadster, wouldn't that solve just about all the issues in north america right now for emissions, performance, workers, and recession?

Pretty sick. 240 mile range is more then enough for most people in a single day. Charge over night and ready to go. 60k is still cheaper then I thought. Just keep in mind on what you'll spend in electric bill.
