Default Spy Pic: 06 Pt Cruiser

Spy Shots: 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

A retro-wagon gets modern-day updating.

by Hans Lehmann/Hidden Image (2004-01-19)

(TCC Staff) These spy photos, taken just recently, capture several prototypes of the Chrysler PT Cruiser and reveal updated styling.

The front styling is new, with a much flatter nose than the previous edition, a more rounded grille, and a flatter front bumper. The headlights have been redesigned to include the signature chrome-ringed twin lights behind a clear plastic cover. The grille sports a small box pattern as shown (at least partially) on the red prototype.

Rear styling is slightly changed with a new rear bumper that is smoother and lacking the recessed and sculptured shapes around the backup lights and license plate. Also note the whimsical touch of a red-painted pocket just under the rear hatch handle on the white car - matching the red side bumpers at the lower edge of the doors.

Another noticeable difference is the flared edges on both front and rear fenders, just around the wheel openings. These prototypes appear to have slightly larger tires than the current PT Cruisers, indicating perhaps that these might be a new four-wheel-drive model, with higher ground clearance, large tires, and the flared fenders extended out a bit to cover the larger tires.

I think they have a 6 cyl in that. I doubt if that is anywhere near the finished product. I do know for '05 or '06 it is supposed to be built on a different platform.

PT Cruiser will get facelift for 2006: AWD now?

Chrysler is testing early prototypes of the next-generation PT Cruiser, which is scheduled to arrive in spring 2006.
Although the vehicle's profile won't change dramatically, Chrysler designers have created a fresh new face that will tie the next PT Cruiser more closely to the rest of the Chrysler vehicle family. That means a new grille and new twin-headlight theme.
Supplier sources say the next PT will shift from its current front-wheel-drive platform, which is shared with the Dodge Neon, to a new compact platform that is being engineered primarily by Mitsubishi Motors Corp., in which Chrysler parent DaimlerChrysler AG holds a 37 percent stake.
This new chassis, which can be configured for front- and all-wheel-drive models, will be shared with the next-generation Neon, as well as the redesigned Mitsubishi Lancer and Outlander.

It will really depend what the front end looks like. I hope it doesn't look like the stupid mini van (I hate mini vans!). IMHO the one thing the PT had going for it was the fact it doesn't look like a lot of the clones out there. That's one reason I liked the Neon and especially the SRT4 because they didn't look like clones. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc, just switch the name plates and you can't tell the difference.

i knew it...look at the first set of pics...most of you failed to notice the fully independent rear suspension, the muffler laying across like the Neon and the smoother rear bumper. Basically with the addition of the different exhaust and IRS it allows clearance for AWD.....hmmm new PT + AWD + 2.4L Turbo + NGC = PT Turbo AWD

....Forrester XT beware
