DaimlerChrysler recalls more than 430,000 PT Cruisers
Associated Press

AUBURN HILLS -- DaimlerChrysler AG is recalling 38,391 PT Cruisers because fires can start under the hood, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday.

PT Cruisers from the 2001-2005 model years are involved in the recall.

NHTSA said a high-pressure power steering hose can loosen and come into contact with other parts of the vehicle. If the hose is punctured and power steering fuel leaks out, a fire can start.

DaimlerChrysler spokeswoman Curtrise Garner said there have been nine reports of fires because of the defect but no reported injuries or deaths. She said the company will inspect the hoses for free, make sure they are routed correctly and replace them if necessary.

“The likelihood of a fire is very, very low,” she said.

Garner said the company hasn’t yet determined when it will begin notifying consumers about the recall.

Well, I'm glad DCX is doing the right thing and fixing this instead of shoving under the carpet, so to speak.

Yep,
This shit happened to me 40 miles after I left the dealer, only I was not in a PT Cruiser, it was my SRT-4. As I pulled into the parking space at my house, white smoke started billowing out from under the hood and my neighbor came running over telling me I had sparks flying out from underneath my car. Had the car towed back to the dealer and they found that the power steering line from the pump to the rack came loose at the rack, and was spraying fluid all over the red hot catalytic converter. So, what my neighbor actually observed was flaming droplets of PS fluid dripping on the ground. They tightened up the line and it has been fine ever since (scared the shit out of me though and made my new car buying experience a very unpleasant one). There was no damage aside from having to re-fill the PS reservoir.
