Not sure what Maryland's specific law is. I have driven in Maryland and Delaware, and have had no problems with the police. After I tinted mine, I finally did a Google search on PA laws. On the Penn DOT website, I found the not so specific law that states "parking and brake lights must be visible from a distance of not less than 500 feet".

I immediately dragged the wife outside, and drove 550 feet away. When I hit the brakes, she gave me the thumbs up, so I knew I'd be OK. Does this mean I won't get pulled over?...NO. I do know however, that I won't lose in court if some cop is having a bad day some time.

I've had my plates run by three cops over the last six months. I'm sure that the tint was a contributing factor. After they find out that I'm a 38 year old with no priors or points, they figure it isn't worth the hassle of ticketing/trying to ticket me since the law is so obtuse.

Here's two photos so you can see how dark my tint is.

Like pabooster said, it is legal as long as the light is visable. But that doesnt mean a cop wont harrase you or not try to ticket you. In day time it is very easy to tell that it they are tinted and a cop could give u car about it. So dont tint them too dark and i think you'll be ok.

Its kind of like tinting your windows, it all depends on the cop. If they really want to bust your balls im sure they can. I have them done and i had them done on my last car as well and have been pulled over a few times and they have never mentioned it.
