i know some of you as well as i have been wondering what that flap on the side of an e55 projector is for. we always end up cutting it off. i just got a set in today and apparently another sheild is attached to it . i have no idea how its powered, it does not move when the solenoid is activated (it move independently). so your guess is a as good as mine.
