Default Multifunction switch problem?

Ok so this started about a month ago, i would turn my headlights on and nothing would happen but if i switched to highbeams they would work fine. I figured it was a fuse so i checked the 20a(?) fuse in the engine fuse box and then also checked the mini 10a ones in the d/s of the dash. Both were fine so i moved on to other things. I have HIDs so i figured i maybe i had a bad bulb or ballast and i have an extra kit so i tried swapping them but that did nothing. I tried putting stock bulbs back in that i had and this also did nothing, same situation only working on highbeam. Then after a few days it started working fine again. No issues for a while and then it started being an intermitten problem. I could turn them on and they would be working fine, turn them off and then back on and that would be the end of it but if i kept playign with them i could get them to work. (also the fog lights were not working) Now they are not working at all, just the highbeams as before but to add something else into the mix yesterday my gauge cluster back lighting stopped working. Cluster works fine but the lighting so you can see it at night would not light up. Tried again this morning and its working fine again.

Basically i was originally thinking a loose connection or bad wire but the fact that it will work and then i can turn it off and back on and then its not working makes no sense so someone suggested posibly the multifunction switch.

anyone have any imput on this idea, or maybe another suggestion? Any info would be appriciated.

Mfs or the plug on the steering wheel column is melted. Replace both of them and you should be all set.
