Default LED Window switches?

So I just recentley tryd to replace my window switch led's to blue, i know in the how to is says that you need #74's but i had also heard that you can use 3mm. so i went and picked them up at frys, installed them and when i tested them out they where nice and bright for about 5 seconds and then started to fade to a very dim purple after about 10 seconds, i took the switch back apart and found that the led was basically burning out. Any one know why so quick? no resistors maybe? second question, my second window switch on the drivers side didn't even have an led in it, it didn't even have the prongs that you would solder one to, has anyone run into this before?
