Default LED tail pics and my impressions of them

Figured I would post up some of these tails before I paint the lens' transparent red for a more oem look. I don't like the way these are all clear and thats why I will be taking them apart and painting the inside clear outer lens transparent red to match oem looking tails only with the benefit of having LEDs and VERY bright ones at that!!

A few things to note. Yes these are what appear to be nice quality LEDs. They are not the ones that are hardly visible or bright. These are just as bright as other oem LED equipped tails and operate just as they should. They don't have the annoying rapid flash that you get when usually dealing with LEDs and not installing load resistors. These have a built-in flasher located inside the assembly of each tailight housing. The sound of the flasher is somewhat noticeable if you stick your head in the trunk while they are flashing. Another nice thing about these tailights is the reverse light is actually sufficient enough to illuminate an area for backing up unlike the stock reverse light which is more for a warning to others than for visibility for the driver lol. Again, thse tails are very bright that when I was driving down the interstate and passing the road signs, I would look in my rear view and side mirrors and flash my brakes and I would literally light up the reflective surfaces for about a 1/8th of a mile, not kidding!!

I also wanted to test install these to ensure there were no leaking issues related to water and such. Well, we had a hurricane come thru here and and they had absolutely no water inside the lens like other cheaply made aftermarket tailights usually do. They are made by DEPO and DEPO makes extremely nice quality replacement lighting so that was no suprise to me they held up fine. I'm sure once I open them up for painting I might create a leak or two but that just comes with the territory of modding things like this and is a simple fix once you find the spots that are leaking.

IMO I think in their stock form they are ricey but with a red transp. lens or a black housing they will look much better.

Anyways, on with the pics....

I think a smoked cover would make those look great! I agree they are a little flashy as is but with some work they would be great!

I agree, hence why I'm painting these.

CF would be VERY pricey if anyone was to mod these in real CF, not the faux crap.

Smoked cover would be awesome and I might try that too should I run across another pair. And I agree, they have potential to look great, just not in the chrome-only style.

John

I will most definatly post pics once I'm done painting them. The black housings will be available from DEPO or 4headlights here shortly.

Here are the black housings that are made by DEPO...

Here is a chop I'm sure some have seen befroe. This is how the red lens will sort of come out looking....

more recent chops that reflect what will be the final looking result...

Here is a rear view chop...

To give you guys a better idea, the opacity and color will look almost identical to these results. These are not my tails nor done by me but the same principle and effect applies...

Do the blinkers work as they are supposed to with these or do you need to wire in a resistor? Do they have that distinct on/off flash like the higher end cars as opposed to the "fade" on/off like regular incadesent bulbs (stockers)?

Also how bright are the reverse lights cause I wouldn't mind upgrading to something brighter. I'd probably buy a black pair of these when the come out.

Yes they flash EXACTLY like the Cadi's, Lexus, Infiniti LED tails do. VERY distinct ON/OFF flash.

Its all good, just pointing out the answer to questions I knew some people would ask. But yes they flash very nice and crisp. i had a video clip but I believe I deleted it out of my camera. I'll take anbother clip once I'm done painting and they are back on the car. There is a clip of them flashing floating around the forum here somewhere...
