Default Kelvin rating question...SL 65AMG

Saw one tonight on the road, and the color output on the lights was amazing. Its the best I've seen, and I've been staring at quite a few of them lately. I searched, but can't find it. Does anyone know the Kelvin ratings that Mercedes uses?

kelvin output doesn't refer to how bright the light is, or how far the beam goes, it refers to the color temperature of the light, ie, 4300k=white, 5000-6000k=really white, then the higher you go you hit blue and eventually purple. fwiw, the ISF standard for white (like on your tv) is somewhere near 6400k.

I know that, but he had a great visibility of what was on the road compared to my Kelvin rating. And it looked far superior to most 4300ks that Ive seen. Thats why I wanted to know.

supra, + 1 cool for even knowing what the ISF is. I'm impressed if that matters at all.

sparky, +1 cool for the new avatar, better than the helmet shot. [borat] very nice [/borat]

Lumens = light output

Kelvin = color temperature

All OE HID systems utilize a bulb with a 4300K kelvin temperature. The lumens produced from a projector HID system may vary from car to car. The variance comes from the design and size of the projector. Some projectors will have a wider reach in light output then others.

That may be the reason why this particular Mercedes appeared to be brighter than others.

Hak have you seen one? Its absolutely amazing. I've never seen anything like it before. I want those projectors if thats whats making that big of a difference. But the headlight housings are 1300 a piece.

I did read in one of your threads that BMW uses a 6000K and theres another car mfr that uses a 4100k, and another that uses somewhere near 4700k. Thats why I asked this question...so it might be stupid but I thought it was valid

Thanks TheBeak LOL

I don't recall ever stating any OE manufacturer uses anything other than 4300k.

Most MB use entry level projectors. More than likely its just another Hella E55 which are nothing compared to higher end projectors like Stanley or Kioto (S2K, TL, Porsche, LS430, etc).

If you thought that MB was nice and bright, you should get behind a car that has some real good projectors

To give you an idea of how much high end projectors make a difference, this is what it looks like behind my Highlander with Lexus LS430 projectors in it....

Those LS430s are insanity!! I'll have to find where I read it, but it was something along the lines of 'everyone thinks that BMW has the best lighting on the market, when they use bulbs that are 6000ks instead of 4300ks'. I'm going to have to do a search but I know thats what I read somewhere.

I didn't find it here so I must have read it on HID Planet. Then again they do say believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.

I'll stick with 4300ks for mine....for now

6k is the highest I'd go if you wanted something a little bluer than 4300k. Of course the higher you gho in kelvin the less lumens (useable light).

These following pictures are underexposed but the important thing is to notice the loss of light output with the 6k bulb versus the 4300k...

4300k

6000k
