Default How to: Mod your Ebay Projector Foglight Halos

Okay so the thought crossed my mind to change out the LEDs in my projector foglight halos. I suggested this to a friend who lives down in FL, also an SRT owner, who has an OB. He wanted his orange. I said buy the stuff, ship it to me I'll do it for you. So...enough stories here we go. These foglights are not mine, they belong to SRTPastryChef, though I do have a set of my own.

You need:
- Pair of Projector Foglights from Ebay (Mine are from SpeedInifiniti)
- 4 5mm Pre-Wired LEDs from Oznium.com in color of your choice
- Silicone (preferably clear with a thin nozzle)
- Wire strippers
- A phillips head and a flat head

1. Start by unscrewing the two screws on either side of the projector. Remove these. The projector will need to be turned 180 degrees so it's beam is aimed properly. From the factory that makes these, the beam is upside down.

2. Using your flathead, pry the "chrome" feet of the halo off of the projector, and remove the projector from the housing. Leave the halo ring there.

3. Now you can do one of two things. Using a thin flathead, pry between the glass and the plastic shroud and pop off the lens. OR Try prying the shit out of the halo ring to get it out. The first option is easier, and you can seal the glass better the second time around. I chose this option. It makes taking them apart and putting them back together way easier.

4. On the rear of the halo, once you have everything apart, you'll see a clear rubber piece with wires coming out of it. Pull that out.

5. Pulling from the LEDs, pull the LEDs and the wires out of the rubber.

6. Group together two of your 5mm Oznium LEDs and slide them through, wires first SIMULTANEOUSLY. It makes things so much easier than doing them one at a time. Once you slide them down all the way, bend one to the right and one to the left. Apply a small bead of silicone in between the two of them. Twist, butt connect, or solder both of the ground wires and both power wires together.

7. Apply a thin bead of silicone around the perimeter of the plastic housing. Place the lens on, and tape it using masking tape or painter's tape, heat up the edges and tape it firmly. Allow it to set for at least 24 hours. The tighter its held on there, the better your seal. The seal these come with is VERY poor.

8. Repeat for the other side.

Any questions....feel free to ask. Mine will be modded shortly also

Now for pictures.....Here is what they light up as when you first get them (white but the camera gives it a blue hue)

The two of them together:

All apart (except the lens, I popped that off afterwards)

Orange glow:

The two of them again:

Crystal... you took pictures of everything except the LED's all wired up?

I understood exactly what you're talking about but unfortunately unless you've seen the LED's that come with it this thread probably made little sense.

Sooo.... Here's a picture of what they stock bulbs look like.

Basically she upgraded to some larger LED's in whatever color you choose. Glad to see it worked out OK, nice work.

Do the new bulbs look any brighter or produce hotspots along the ring at all?

BTW- For those who are thinking about attempting this, I highly recommend you buy these pre-wired LED's from Oznium as they come with the proper resistors already soldered & shrink wrapped

There is a picture of the LEDs up there. The picture where the entire unit is disassembled shows the two LEDs in the white holder with the orange/black wires coming off the end of it. They really aren't much larger, if larger at all. The only reason I did this is because he wanted them to be orange, not the whitish blue they come in. I had him purchase the pre-wired LEDs from Oznium for that reason, they are SO much easier to work with.

Here's a different angled shot without the pre-wired LEDs from Oznium in it where you can see how the bulbs look when it comes to you:

I wasn't originally intending on writing up a how-to on this, so I wasn't as detailed with the pictures as I could have been. I will be doing mine also so I can add more pictures then. I could also disassemble these and take more shots, I haven't siliconed the lens yet.

Very cool, Crystal. I still need to pick up a set of these at some point (although, I'll prolly just paint the halo flat black ).

Can you do the same thing with actual head lights?

I honestly don't see why you wouldn't be able to do it with the regular headlights. It would probably be far more labor intensive as these you can just pop the lens off and the headlights need to be heated to be opened. ND4SPD can probably contribute more towards the internals of those headlights as he has taken his completely apart.

Crystal,

Hows the intensity of the fog lights with a pnp hid kit? Do they give alot of foreground light? Is the backside sealed up so you wont get dirt and water on the plastic lens?

No, the backside of the housing is not sealed at all. The projector just kind of sits in there. If you use a PNP HID kit you need to utilize the rubber grommet that comes with the kit to seal off the back of the projector. You can't use the backing plate that it comes with normally.

Here are pictures of all of my lights and output of these projectors with a PNP 3k HID kit

Can this also be done with the MPx Halo Rings led's? mine only work when they want to and I believe that its caused by the CHEAP LEDS that they use!!
