I got 4300k fog light hids for about 6 months now and have had no melting or any other problems.

It was probably the harness that caught fire due to them not running a relay harness. HIDs run cooler than factory halogen headlight bulbs...there's no reason they would catch fire randomly. However my friend who ran some aftermarkets in his 02 rex had his harnesses catch on fire because he was drawing too much power from them (i.e. no relay harness). I've had HID fogs for almost three years now...with a relay harness and no issues.
