Default Everyone with a melted multifunction switch or crappy lighting

After my multifunction switch melted, i rewired my headlights using a relay off my parking lights, so if the parking lights were on, my low beams came on, I ran the power directly off the battary, then through a new fuse box, and i can tell you it make my lights so much brighter. I no longer have the yellow tint (car came with "cool blue" bulbs from autozone) and they are actually a light blue tint. The stock wiring goes through a couple areas where the fog light and head light power combine and pass throuh 16 or 18 gauge wiring, basically speaker wire (which is why the multifunction switch melts). Its rediculous, my whole headlight system is run on 10 gauge (overkill? ) and its like a night and day difference.

If there is an interest i can draw up the scematic of it, but i was wondering if anyone else had done a rewire?

sounds like a bad ground to me. MFS would take out both headlights and foglights.

this is how i ran my headlight fix.

I ran a positive from my fuse box out a fuse that was only powered with ignition on to my fogs through a 15 amp fuse, basically DRL's.

For my headlights i put a relay from autozone ($3.99) into the wiring to my right parking light. I beleive i ran the power in to the 85 and power out from 86 to the parking light. (this causes the parking light to not come on, but turn signal will still work as it comes from another power source) i then ran a always on power coming from the positive line, in the fuse box under the hood. it ran to the input (30 i think on the relay) then the 87 ran to a 15 amp fuse, the fuse then split into two and one ran to the power line on each headlight. Ill attach a poorly drawn MSPAINT.

Edit: I need to look up which wires i spliced.... ill draw one up tommorow.

Mine went a while ago................first I just lost my foglights, and then eventually I lost the low beams........I could still use my High beams but I had to continually hold the lever back.............anyway.......Jay @ N2MB rewired mine to make it all work like stock again using the same switch......not sure how he did it, but its been all good for like 2 years now........

When I turn on my right blinker my fogs come one. I can push in on the handle for the lights and it turns off. Kind of like internally it pops out on its own and the fogs turn on. It isn't happening now. I just tapped it on the end and it stopped. I've wondered if I should pull the dash and check the wiring?

There are tons of failures showing up right now. I have 2 cars that have this in the shop right now. I will be working on a fix for it very soon if the dealer doesnt beat me to it.

the only fix you gotta do is reduce the power going throught the MFS. With a little inginuity a complete kit could be thrown together that uses the stock MFS for 1/10 of the price the dealer charges to fix this, using the stock light switch and all.

take the couple screws that hold the cover on your steering coloumn on and look at the bottom/end of the grey 20 wire connector, its probably melted.

why didn't you get your lights to turn on with the actual headlight signal instead of the parking lights?

because at the moment im still usuing my melted connector, so my headlights get no signal, and if i rewired it i run the risk of another fire.

Yeah some pics would be nice.

My fogs just stopped working also, however my MFS is not melted nor is the 20 wire connector. I took the MFS apart and everything looks fine in there. Nothing burnt or charring.

Might sound stupid... but have you checked the bulbs? One time my fogs went out and since I had previously had a melted MFS I just assumed it was that again and drove around for a month with no fog lights before I decided to check the bulbs and somehow they were both burnt out at the same time......

I had the same problem with my headlights. One went out and the other about 15 minutes later. So I tried my high beams and those went too. Thought it was the MFS. Found out it was just the bulbs. Easy fix.
