Default CC and NiteHawk Present: The Flasher Relay Fix!

Ok, after months of trial and error, we FINALLY have a REAL solution folks. Here's a quick write up for you!

First, remove the flasher relay from the multi-function switch by removing the 2 screws from the bottom of the cover under the steering wheel.

Next, You will see two tabs on 1 side and 1 tab on the other side holding the cover of the flasher in place. carefully pry this open so that the circuit board is exposed. (i wasnt so careful)

On the back of the circuit board, you will notice a small IC Chip with 8 pins coming off of it. There's is a referance notch in the white line going around it to mark the "top" of the chip.

Pin layout in the picture is as follows

5 4
6 3
7 2
8 1 (note pin 7 trace and pin in red)

Pin 7 is the Lamp Failure circuit, which is what causes the ricer flash when replacing bulbs with LED's. This is the circuit we are going to disable. To do so, take an X-Acto knife and either break the pin where it meets the circuit board, or cut through the copper wire on the circuit board itself to make sure that it is completely disconnected.

Once you've done this, put the cover back on, reinstall into the multi-function switch, and you're DONE! NO MORE FAST FLASH!

I realise this will defiantly upset some vendors now that they dont get to sell their resistors anymore, but in all honesty, this is the SAFEST solution to fast flash...

Bulbs only or does this happen to the LED tails from Depot?

this fixes the fast flash found when you install led bulb replacements for the tails and front turn signals, also fixes the fast flash from a burned out bulb. lights siuch as 4headlights led tails have their own flasher relays inside that prevent fast flashing with their tails.

if you could show exactly where the flasher relay and the mulit function switch are with pictures that would me great. I took off all the cover under the steering wheel and i could locate the damn thing. After trying to find it for 30 minutes in the 105 degree whether i gave up and thought maybe you could show with pics of exactly how to get to it. Thank you

Hi Gremlin,
You need to take off the top cover behind the steering wheel. This is the cover with the hazard flasher button sticking out of it. There are 2 screws on either side of the wheel that you access from below the column. It sound like you already removed them, but just pulled the lower, not the upper cover.
Under the cover- dead center is a black box at the back (near the guages). it is the only black box on the top of the column. This is the relay. It pulls AWAY from you. Chances are it will stick, so wiggle it gently as you pull and it will come out. Just remember which way it came out so it will be easier to re-install.
If you have any other questions just PM me.

Should take you all of 5 minutes to pull it, 5 to alter- if you just sever the tiny little line with an exacto, and 5 to put it back. I actually cut the pin off that Nitehawk refers to, but his way is easier.

Good Luck!

CC.

thanks i just did it this morning. Its so nice to have normal turn signals again The first attempt i was trying to look for a relay like the size of a 12 volt battery but when i got in there it was just the size of two quarters long. Great post

can't you just replace the flasher with the cheap autozone one that has no fast flash when bulbs are blown, i did that on my motorcycle it says it right on the package that it doesn't have that feature.

Actually, you can use the EP-27 that you can get at any autozone/pepboys/etc.

BUT-AS MANY PEOPLE HAVE FOUND OUT YOU CANNOT USE YOUR HAZARD FLASHERS.

If you hit the hazard button, you will blow 2 fuses, one in the pass. compartment and 1 under the hood. Without them you will have NO taillights.

It's just so much easier to do this simple mod. It's a No-dollar solution.
How much cheaper can you get?

Hmm, could this possibly be what causes my Eclipse CD8445 Head unit to constantly flicker it's display lights when I turn on my parking and headlamps?

Default Update...

Still working with no problems what so ever! If you want to slow down the flashing speed even more, find a 4.0uf capacitor and replace the capacitor marked C2 on the circuit board, this will slow it down to pretty much what OEM speed is.....

I've had a hard time finding a 4.0uf cap on the net, and radio shack definatly doesnt have them, so i soldered multiple smaller caps together to make roughly 4uf. i think my total was 4.025 or something like that. the higher the capacitance, the longer the flash is, the lower, the faster.

I found this out when i put in a 27uf and it almost didnt flash at all, it took about 10 seconds between off and on. so like on...10sec...off...10sec...on, etc......way too slow, lol.
