Default Cathode wiring problem

Well, i was trying to hook up some cold cathodes under my dash and i wired it to my battery and the wires got really hot (but the cathodes still worked afterwards, i tested them). So i figured that the wire i was using was too small to wire directly to the battery and decided instead (also for cleanliness) to wire it into the power outlet. I wired it all up to the switch, reds to reds and blacks to blacks, i go to flip the switch and nothing. What could be wrong?
