i'm starting on my hid conversion and got a set of angel eyes thrown into the retro hids. i'm looking at trying to incorporate these into my new headlights (not entirely sure if it'll fit yet). anyways, it looks like i need an led light source (bulb) to light up the angel eyes (it's just a hollow tube). does this sound right? anyone try to retro this? i used a LED small flashlight to test the angel eyes and they lit up okay.
yes, you'll need an LED to light em up. get bright blue led's they'll match with your HID's. wire them into the blinker lights. i think that'll be the easiest way.

i've been looking into the leds. it seems like quite a pain to incorporate them as you've got to solder in resistors and/or step down the voltage. plus i'd have to custom make housings so they either fit directly into the angel eyes sockets or the fiber optic cable they plug into. still i think i'll give it a try as all the components are pretty cheap. my ballast/junction box is gonna get huge tho!
LEd isn't your only option. If you want true real OEM-style angel eyes, you'd get CCFL and get the real results your looking for, not the cheaper look. I say go all out if your going to do it. i am not a big fan of the whole angel eye thing but from every LEd one I've sen they all look cheap. They aren't lit 100% the same intensity all the way around and looks more like clear flex-hose than a nice clean almost invisible clear tube such as found on true CCFL angel eye units.
Here is the difference I'm talking about:
CCFL
LED
you be the judge on which loks better if you into that kinda thing.
hmm, so where can i get more info on the ccfl? plus will it cost an arm and a leg (unlike the LED). altho the LED that you've shown looks fairly poor i've seen one (on HIDplanet actually) that used a superbright LED that looks just like the CCFL. so it can be done with the proper selection of LED. maybe the angel eyes i got are of an older design but the look like they are designed to work with an LED souce. the harness consists of a fiber optic array. they've got a single light (LED, i assume) source branching to feed both a pair of angel eyes on each headlight assembly.
btw hak, i might pm you for some info on the retro swap. all my stuff arrived at the post office today.
we have developed a specific dodge kit, it is ccfl based and has a lifetime warranty, pm me or email for details, i am working with the admins on a sponsership.
we are the source for this and many other kits.
a little teaser for you guys:
we are looking for 5-10 testers, you will get your kit a very special price.
