Default Possibly getting a wolf/lab mix

I think we might have found the right animal. We found a local breeder that is selling a handful of wolf/lab mixes...all white and the father is an akc registered labrador. The female wolf is a "mut" of the litter, he said. We are about to drive out to the "farm" or whereever he is at to check them out. They are 7 weeks old and he wants 150...Thoughts opinions? Oh ya...they have the first shots and what not...

My grandfather had a wolf once... dangerous.. very very dangerous.. she was loyal till she died defending my grandfather against a bear (he lived on a ranch) she was friendly enough.. I was only a kid but she didnt mind the family but anyone else new who came around she wasnt very trustworthy... took her awhile, and if she thought one of us were in danger from a stranger she would attack without hesitating... but like I said.. I was a kid.. she would let me climb on her and ride her like a horse.. and nver bite me or even growled at me.. I think it might depend on how they are raised, if their parents were domesticated and stuff.. thats the only experiance with wolves Ive ever had

Post up pictures of the lab/wolf mix.

How did your grandpa get a Wolf? It's like the movie White Fang. Very cool.

His brother had the mom as a pet and she got out and was running with another pack for a few months then came back pregnent.. had two pups one male one female.. he had to build a higher fence all along his property, if someone came to fence to talk to one of us inside she would come running and just throw herself trying to attack whoever was on the other side.. hee hee.. its funny to think back now the look on their faces.. she was only 7 when she died my grandfather killed the bear but he had hurt Shell pretty bad and she died a few days later... she saved his life.. pretty rad dog if you ask me

You may be better off getting a couple of Micheal Vicks pit bulls. Any dog with any kind of real wolf in them is not a good pet.
Terrible watchdogs

Owners who buy pure wolves seeking savage guard dogs are often surprised to find that they make terrible watchdogs.

"You have a supposedly ferocious wolf. But when a burglar comes, do you think it will attack? It will hide behind you, because you are the alpha in the pack. If someone rings the doorbell, they go and hide," O'Carroll said.

Breeders of wolf dogs, as the hybrids are known, publish glowing testimonials from happy clients.

But the wolf sanctuary gets hundreds of calls from wolf or wolf hybrid owners complaining about the odd behaviors of their pets: reducing the yard to a moonscape of holes, digging cavernous dens under the garage, chewing things to pieces, climbing fences, and howling to the moon.

One man shot his wolf dog after it ate his chickens. A woman telephoned in tears after her wolf hybrid ate her most valuable thoroughbred foal.

"You can't impose your will on it, because it's half wild animal. You can't expect it to act like a dog," O'Carroll said. "People buy them as a status symbol. It's like saying, 'I've got a Bengal tiger.' It's like a man buying a Porsche as opposed to a VW."

Not family pets

O'Carroll and wolf experts in the United States, such as the Wolf Park in Battlefield, Ind., warn that wolf dogs should not be seen as family pets, and even those socialized to humans can attack children, especially if a child falls and cries. O'Carroll's motive, apart from rescuing the wolves, is to educate the public about wolves and hybrids.
dog you really want around your family. For obvious reasons, if any of the wild or protectivness of there food or space because an issue, it will get ugly.

heres an a little info on the south african hybrids

Do not buy it!!! Wolf hybrids are more likely to bite than pure wolves. Wolves have a inate fear of human and dogs do not, alot of hybrids get the agressiveness and need to challenge the alpha pair from the wolf but they also inherit the lack of fear of humans from the dog which can be a very bad combo. Even though a lab is probably the tamest of dogs I personnally think it's a bad idea to cross breed and should be banned.

I guess you cannot take the wild out of a Wolf hybrid.

No it's not illegal if you have a permit which isn't that hard to get down here in FLA.
