Its a checking account, not a fucking credit card.

<--- has overdraft protection.

Of course you need some money in your savings account for that to work though.

That sounds like a Catch-22. If you have money in the bank, you don't need overdraft protection. That would just be redundant.

Banks are fuckin shady like that. I think it was a thread posted here a few weeks ago about how they run the larger withdrawals first before they deposit anything, just to try to get the account to overdraft...pretty fucked up.

It is always a good practice to have a minimum amount in your checking account at all times. Start off at $500, then just keep going up and up.

No, actually not quite. It is good practice to have a minimum amount in your SAVINGS account starting with 500 MINIMUM. If you dont have 500 in your savings and you have steady income, you are living outside of your means and you need an adjustment.

You need to continue saving until you have enough in your savings to convert it into a money market account. Then the bank will pay you JUST to have your money sitting there!@ That is something some of us know as 'interest'.

If you don't read the paperwork you receive when you open your account stating what the fees are, and whether or not they post your deposits/withdrawls in any specific way is your own fault.

If you cannot handle the basic fundamentals of banking, go to wal-mart and buy a pre-paid Visa card and load your money on that. I agree that the bank should not have made SO much money on overdraft fees... but... here is a contraversial principle. RAISE the fees, I guarantee it happens less.

It is not fucking rocket science... but this is why they want to put 'basic banking' into high schools. Teach you how to balance a check book and write a check. Really? Shoulda posted something like this in the politics section. Lotta vultures over there woulda loved it.

True True, I guess I was just assuming that since people had money in their checking, they MUST have money in savings. It is straight up retarded to only keep money in a checking account. I actually didn't really learn that until after I got home from deployment.

Living paycheck to paycheck ftmfl.

why the fuck would I let my money sit in a saving account or money market account earning 1.5% interest a year?

there are better options out there to help your money make money for you.

I try to keep at least 1500 in savings minimum. Then with checking I put in what I'm going to pay out on bills and spend on food/shit. The rest goes to pay off debt. Fuck debt!!

I added overdraft protection (doesn't cost anything) so if I DO miss something it only costs $5 for them to transfer money for me.

I agree...it's always a good idea to have some money is savings....we actually have a years worth of income in savings because in case we lose our jobs, we have income we can depend on...I'm not going to depend on the gov't to take care of me...hell they can't even take care of themselves.

Agreed. Also, on the money market issue... as of 2 weeks ago the rates on money market were the same as 12 month CDs except it is much more accessible in a money market account. Other than low risk mutual funds, anything else would involve investing but if you cannot even balance your checkbook, you probably shouldn't be investing.

Agreed.

Fuck....One time I had over 1,000 in my savings account and my checking account went negative. You would think they would automatically transfer money from my savings to my checking to cover it. Fuck no they didn't. Fucking bastards. They fixed it though when I called to complain. Fuck Chase.

My check book register is in my head.

I always use my debit card for almost everything. It comes out almost instantly so my balance is usually up to date.

If I wrote checks I would use a register though..

See that statement RIGHT THERE IS A FUCKING JOKE
Why should they charge you to transfer money when they dont have to do shit to transfer it
it shouldnt cost you a thing
I mean it doesnt cost anything when YOU transfer it yourself so why should it cost when they do?
