Default Got a ticket... what to do...

So my wife and I were on the way home from my mom's house. I was sitting at a red light (stopped) when all of the sudden I see lights coming at me. Next thing I know the cop car is blocking the left lane and part of the middle lane in which I was sitting in. Ran to my window and asked me for my license and registration. Came back, told me to pull over at the shopping plaza across the light... so I did. Asked me if I was racing someone... "I told him no". There was nobody around on the road, besides a truck behind me at the light.

So he went back to his car, called for back-up. Came back and asked me for a valid insurance card and if my license and my address was all correct. I told him "yes sir".

He went back to his car, came back with a ticket and told me... "I don't believe you that you weren't racing"... "I think you were showing off". So I didn't say anything back. He said, "I was sitting off the side doing paperwork when I saw a red blur go past me, I wasn't radaring so I don't know how fast you were going". "I'm still giving you a ticket for violation of traffic control device / speed limit sign". Then he asks, "Do you have any questions". I told him, "No sir". He then told me, "These roads need to be kept safe, this isn't some race track so slow down".

Under violations/comments he wrote:
"VIOLATION OF TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE (SPEED LIMIT SIGN). VERY HIGH RATE OF SPEED"

So to me it doesn't make sense as to why I still received this ticket. For those wondering I was on 66th St. by Tyrone Mall (22nd Ave N.). He didn't know how fast I was going, he wasn't paying attention to the road since he was doing paper work. He looked up and saw some red vehicle pass him and assumed it was going beyond the speed limit. He assumed I was either racing or showing off. But there was only one other vehicle on the road, some beat up truck behind me at the light. My wife was with me and her SRT-4 is a lot faster then mine so why would I show off? She's been in my car numerous of times and my car hasn't had mods in months so I don't see why I need to show off to her when she knows what the car can do and so fourth.

The ticket is $123.50

My options are:
-I can fight it and go to court.
-I can pay it and get points taken off my license.
-I can take the class and get a reduced price on the ticket by a few dollars.

Take it to court. He has no proof, whatsoever. He clearly states he didnt have you radared, and you were at a redlight so he couldnt have tailed you to clock speed. Hes full of shit and your standard Officer Dick (no offense Tony) Welcome to the world of SRT's. I've been through the same shit MANY times before. I'd get tickets for no reason, and there isnt much you can do about it because they think a badge is handed down due to devine right. I give you a round of applause for handleing it like you did though. Usually, due to my bipolar manic disorder and severe anger issues, me and the cop go at it. I DO NOT suggest that Me and a state trooper were about 5'3" 120lbs away from duking it out in the streets. The only reason I am super carefull and try my damn hardest not to get pulled over, is because i know that one time i get pulled over is just another chance to go to jail for assault on an officer.

personally it is not worth the time for me to go to court over some dumb bullshit. depends on how many times you have taken the driving course. your only allowed 5 in a lifetime. the ticket I recently got I took the class online got the reduced ticket, and went about my business. You will have to take days off for court, and they wont pay you for time off.

That would be a moving violation.....4 points and an insurance hike. Think about your options very carefully.

Jesus, that ticket is absolute BS.
Well, there are many local lawyers in the area who will and can help you, especially if you have a good driving record, which I assume you do. You will start getting lawyer solicitations in the mail with phone numbers of law firms. Typically $100-$200 and they will go to court for you, and AT LEAST get the points off, and may be able to get the judge to get rid of paying the ticket. Plus with the court date, you won't have to pay the ticket for more than a few months (depending on the court date and the final outcome).
What happenned to you is absolute BS and I hope you get a lawyer to handle this for you, although the ticket amount itsn't too much, it's the principle that the damn cop should never have given you a ticket, especially when he said he was "doing paperwork."
He obviously wasn't paying attention, that idiot.
It's cops like him that make us need a little tape recorder in our cars to record the garbage that comes out some of these cops' mouths. Take the tape to court and the case is dismissed.
Good luck to you!

well, according to the existence of this thread, apparently he can.

still a bullshit ticket, but like dan said, be very careful. hire an attorney and just pay them the $100 to take care of it.

Wow...now that's a BS ticket for sure. Probably the worst excuse for a cop yet haha. Especially for someone that said that they weren't really paying attention and didn't radar you but assumed it was you. You know they record the things they say lol. I'd get a court date...but then again, I do for most bs stuff. Then I decide if it's worth actually going through the whole system...in this case, I probably would. If not, then no contest, lower the fine big time, and if you haven't gotten any tickets in a long time, the judge will normally not put the points on your license...for example.

Remember the ticket I got for not having headlights on in Sonics....well, just went to court for that this past Monday. I wanted to fight so bad, Tina said just plead no contest and be done with it. My ticket was originally about $250 or more for that....yes wow. I have a horrible driving record by the way, I went, judge asked what do you plea, I said on contest. He looked at my record, said ok...reduced the fine to...don't remember by how much, but the court fee is $45, and some other fee. But my ticket came out to $100.50, a whole hell of a lot better than $250+. Also, he said he will not issue the points on my license for this one..woo hoo, 3 points I don't have to worry about for this year.

But good luck...again BS ticket lol
