Well, I gaurentee the streetracing crowd would dwindle if they stopped closing all our tracks,or if the tracks were open more often. I know when Perris Raceway was open. I didn't streetrace at all because with the track open once a week and close to me, there was no need.
What they need to do, is open Fontana every Friday and Saturday night, from like 8pm - 2am. Charge like 20 bucks to race, 5 to spectate, sell food and drinks, and let people run grudge match style, (where you can run who you want, with no times, ad only your time on your own slip) And I gaurentee that would almost eliminate the streetracing problem socal has...
But instead, they rather send 750,000 in tax payer dollars to bust up a car meet instead of giving it to the tracks to operate.

LACR up in Palmdale closed last year so the only quarter-mile track that's open somewhat regularly now is Fontana. If you want to get a lot of track time in, the best bet is to look for some of the private track rentals. Expensive but worth it unless you're happy with maybe 3 or 4 passes on the street legal days (and they're talking about banning slicks at street legal days if they aren't DOT approved). There's also Pomona which is probably the best track in SoCal but they've only been having a couple events a year that are open to the public. If you're willing to drive out to Bakersfield there's Famoso and a couple people on here race out there. For me I can get to Vegas almost as fast as Fontana but it can be hit or miss for conditions.
If you're looking for an eighth-mile track you've got Irwindale, which if you catch on a night with good prep is a pretty sticky track. There was another one down in Perris that closed last year and also Barona, but it's pretty far south. If the urge catches you to drag race in a parking lot with parking lot type surface prep and a bunch of ricer types (which sadly includes a lot of SRT-4 owners in the region), you've got the occasional Qualcomm events.
What about the 1/4 track out by Camp Pendleton (I think that's where it was)? I went there a few times and it was decent.
Also did the track at Terminal Island by the Navy Base go away too? I was stationed at TI from 89-94 and raced a few times there, Two Brothers Racing...

Totally agree with you savior1974 about them needing to open the tracks more, i know that fontanna is having two street legal event this next month, the 12th and 19th, night races would be way cool, wouldnt have to worry about the heat killing your performance, nothing but nice cool air to release a bit more hp.
Save your money and pay attention to when Pomona will allow your car on the track, and go there. Their prep is amazing, and it's the best track in california period. Otherwise, I'd recommend going to Famoso, which is also pretty good. But that's about 2 hours north in Bakersfield. If you want to practice launching and your 1/8.. irwindale is the spot. If you don't care about your times, and you just want to run it.. .take it to Fontana..or look for private track rental days there too.

You're talking about Carlsbad Raceway, and yep.. .it's closed... and so is Terminal Island, that closed about 10 years ago
Thanks Eric, exactly what I was looking for. Whats the best way to find out about rentals. I always prefered a rental if I could get in on it. In Norfolk we had local boards where the big blocks guys posted and that was where you found out about rentals. Is there a web page like that for SoCal?
I try to avoid street racing If you really want to know why PM me or ask me at a meet, but here is my first SRT...
I would love to race at Pomona, it is the best track, but when they were having the street legal I never had a chance to race down it, either something needed to be fixed on my 72 satillite RB or they would run out of tech cards. Oh well, if they could ever get ride of that dump lady I bet the track would be opened again for street legals.
They occasional coordinate the private track rentals but in the last couple years with Fontana being closed when they moved the track and with other events going on, there hasn't been as many openings for the private rentals. I'm not sure if any other groups are doing public track rentals, but the ones with Alternative have always been pretty good.
I talked for quite a while to the lady in the tower running the street legal event a few weeks back and she said as soon as the lights get install she's moving the street legal events to the evening. That should also increase the number of them they'll be able to do. Right now with other events going on and only so many weekend days in a month there's a hard time fitting in frequent street legal days. With the AAA (Auto Club) sponsorship they want to keep them geared more towards actual street driven cars, so that's where the DOT-only approved slicks come into play as they want to keep the trailered racers away from these events (primarily because they're also "louder" running no mufflers and they have strict noise ordinances they have to comply with which become more important in the evening time).
She also suggested they're looking into doing the private track rental type events themselves once the street legals move to nights and frees up the day racing. It doesn't sound like there will be more test-and-tune sessions for track-only type drag cars. Overall some good stuff and not so good stuff in line for Fontana. The biggest problem I have is the slicks issue. I need to draft up a letter to send to them. Some of their other concerns like the slicks tearing up the track more don't make a lot of sense when street tires chunk and cause more clean up work to have to be done and the DOT legal cheater slicks are essentially only a track tire and shouldn't be driven on the street.
