Default Need transmission advice.

Here's the deal, My clutch is fine (I think).. but lately here's why my trans is doing. When I shift soft, or just cruise .. it almost never grinds or has problems going into gear. Shifts really smooth. but when I get in it.. or try to drive fast .. the gear grinds or kicks out or both. Just a 3rd gear synchro? What do you think?

Its a syncro, 100% sure on that. Did you try double clutching and see what happens?

Yeah, ususally when I half clutch it if I'm feeling it about to kick out.. I stay out of gear... slow the car a little bit and then it does go in.

New 3rd gear synchronizer and new shift fork should get the job done. Depending on how your clutch is and given mileage will determine if you should swap it out or not.

Disassemble, diagnose, and repair it yourself. Who doesn't have a set (or three) of the trans tools for the T850?

It's going to be hard to say for certain what's going on and exactly what needs replaced until you get it out of the car, which can cause quite a bit of uncertainty since you also can't plan how much it will cost you to repair until you know what's broken or worn. Kind-of like the chicken and the egg scenario. It could just be something in the clutch engagement mechanism or maybe that along with a bunch of internal components are damaged.

If you don't plan to do any work yourself including install/removal and you've got the money to cover it and can find a good mechanic/trans guy you shouldn't have any problems, but if you're watching finances and can turn a wrench you might be better off sourcing a low mileage used transaxle. It's probably going to cost less than a rebuild and you can then swap that in and drive the car while you figure out what's wrong with your current trans (if you so desire).
