Default Anyone know a good place to get puppies?

I'm looking for a place in Socal to find a puppy. Not looking for anything too expensive, probably around $300. Also no small breed dogs, has to be at least the size of a Labrador when full grown. Let me know if you guys know any places to get a puppy in the socal area. Preferably in the L.A./Ventura area but I'm willing to drive as far as SD for the right dog.

Go to local pounds first...animal shelters and what not. If you want a KICK ASS breed... Pick up a "Kelpie" They are australian shepards...youtube Kelpie to see some vids.. They are amazing dogs. I have one now and It's smarter than every dog I've ever owned. Loyal as hell and they are not overly hyper but they are super fast and never get tired. I'll never get another type of dog again.

x2 on the aussie's.

tho the kelpie doesnt look really anything like an australian shepard, im sure any breed sprung off of the aussie is A+

i have a mini australian shepard, and it is by far the smartest dog i have ever encountered. it looks and responds to your body language and english as if it knows exactly what you are saying/doing.
very bright dogs. unfortunately, from what i gathered, they arent cheap for a good breed ranging from 800-1200. or atleast, my dog did.

Yep, that describes my dog perfectly. Dog does a lot of stuff simply off hand signs and my movements. Dog won't walk 10 feet in front of me without looking back to see where I'm at... Any kind of Australian shepard is a good bet. Oh and I got lucky.. found my dog as a stray..she was about 7 months old...ish. Walking down the street.. I scored

As long as you get a good bloodline any dog can be trained to be smart....or stupid if you prefer. I have a min-pin and love her. She has a pretty big bag of tricks and is smart as can be. I have also had very good luck with muts.

I tried huskies, but could not get a good bloodline. They were all dumb. period. untrainable, and un-nerving. Word of mouth is your best bet in shopping for a dog. Find out what you want, then start asking the right questions.

Good luck. Let us know what you get.

My wife and I are breeding our Male Wiemeriener (SP?) and my mothers Wiemeriener and should be having pups around March or April.... Father and mother are AKC, but we have to do a DNA swab for the female since the people we bought her from never sent us her papers....

Cool. Thanks for the responses guys. The dog is actually for my g/f and she wants a German Shepherd. Her mom wants a Labrador so ideally I'm going to try to find a mix of those two.

Cane Corso is an excellent dog. Quite large, but overall awesome dogs. On the plus side they dont drool like other mastiffs either.

heh, there is lots of plusses over most any dog and especially over other Mastiffs. If you're serious I'll start listing.

Lets name them then smart ass, but the truth of it is, most people think drool when they think mastiff. Since my lowly comment offended your wealth of knowledge on the breed, feel free to enlighten me. I guess my ICCF membership papers didnt come with cliff notes on my Coursing Mastiff. Also, in case you didnt notice the OP listed around 300.00 as his price point....as you should know that won't even touch the cost of a Corso, so nice posting. Do you have sex with dogs by chance?
