Default 7/12 (Sat.)- Fontana/California Speedway- Street Legals *today*

Didn't see anyone posting about it, but there's a street legal event at Fontana today. Just checked the forecast and it looks a little warm in the afternoon but not too bad. I'm heading out in a few minutes and was checking to see if anyone else is going. The Neon is staying home though and I'm thinking about trying something new I haven't taken to the track before. Something silver. In a two door body style. With a turbo. Did I mention "new"...

Saw a few SRT-4's made it out but only talked to and helped one guy who was having a vacuum line issue. Another pretty fun day. I took the new car out and got in something like 32 passes. They had a Summit event today but I was too exhausted and didn't get up in time after picking up the new car Friday and driving all over the place to go pick up a friend and then head back to the dealer to get my truck and staying up all night. There's another street legal event next Saturday and they said if it's this slow again they're going to start canceling some future events. I'll post another thread but maybe a group of people can make it out next time.

Nice ride....how'd she run?

I guess if they posted these things up a little sooner in advance I would go to them but I gotta clear things with the mrs. way ahead of time in order to get out for the day. I probably won't be going next weekend because I'm getting my new turbo but the august one I'll definitely be down for

Pretty good considering I picked it up on Friday (I did manage to get the recommended break-in miles in before taking it to the track). I got a handful of 14.30's at 101, which for street tires at Fontana is almost identical to what a stock S2 SRT-4 does on street tires under similar conditions. The sixty foot times were still around mid 2.3's so the car has quite a bit more in it. Maybe when the temps aren't in the mid-90's, it isn't as sticky and humid, and with a little better prep I'll shave some more time off.

It also has a nice top end. The trap speeds were similar at the eighth-mile mark to the other couple modified SS Supercharged cars that were there, but was picking up about 6-8 mph on them at the top end of the track. Compared to the MS3 that I raced once (which I'll assume was stock), the Cobalt was about three-tenths and 3 mph faster. On launch it breaks traction pretty easy, even on the 225's Conti's, but I'll be limited on what tire/wheel size I'll be able to put on over the brakes. Guess I'll have to leave the slicks for the Neon.

By S2 do you mean Stage 2?

Yes I do and the key word is "stock" S2. With the boost cranked up as high as the little stock snail will go I was trapping 104 on my SRT-4 a couple weeks ago under similar conditions at Fontana (S2 w/toys, race gas, big AIS intercooler, WGA spring; running 13.40's on slicks at 104). On a cool evening with the same setup I've trapped as high as 107-108 a long time ago but then backed it up with 104's at LACR a week later (and those LACR passes were under same conditions as it was at Fontana this Saturday, hot and muggy). Normal S2 boost but still in high-octane mode and you can take a couple mph off my SRT-4's trap speed.

My friend who has a nearly stock S2 car (Mopar cat-back and a manifold I worked over for him) and running stock S2 boost on high-octane mode and street tires was also running very close to what I did Saturday in the Cobalt. He'd struggle to get traction like everyone else and was averaging 14.2-14.5's at 99-100. Overall my SS averaged 14.3-14.6 at 99-101 with a similar sixty foot time. I'd say the Neon would be just a touch quicker but we'll have to get both cars out together one of these next track days. Both cars on slicks with some cooler temps and good prep would be a ton faster. Just like how my SRT-4 went from running low 14's right into the high 12's years ago when adding that combination of traction (slicks) and track conditions (cool temps and good prep).
