I would have to say XBox at this moment in time. The only reason I traded my XBox for a PS2 was for Gran Turismo 4 coming out. Other than that I would have kept the XBox.
PS2 - The only thing the XBOX has going for it is the "HALO'S" - PS2 has a lot more 3rd party support for games and just a ton more games in general and a ton more good games. Oh yeah, and Microsfot sucks. I guess that about answers your question.
I'd go with PS2 because the titles like Gran Theft Auto, Gran Turismo are great games. The overall build and quality is good to. The controller has the best layout IMO. But I think both are good. Another advantage of PS2 is that you don't have to pay for online while you have to on the XBOX i think.
I played Halo2 on X Box live with my friend for about 5 hours the other day. Lemme tell you that everyone on that is an asshole. I'm not good at Halo.....It just takes me 2 hours before I start getting pretty good. All we did with these guys from the East coast was go to every level and find all the glitches so we could go anywhere on the level. Got boring after a while. Halo is great, but extremely repedative. I think a USED X Box is worth your moeny, but don't buy new. I think the PS2 would be better for the reason that it has the mostgames, so a wider variety of what you can choose to play, GT4, and it can also have NFSU2(Though iIll use my G-Cube for NFSU, it has big trigger for better throttle/braking control, and has the best controller anyways)and for Forza, I can use the G-Cube too. Though I am on the verge of trading my G-Cube in for a new mini PS2. Too bad you only get $30 for the G-Cube up here. Good thing I've got af few games I no longer wish to have.
XBOX all the way... Who cares about games when you can mod it, run Divx AVI/MPGs movies, play mp3s, stream audio/video even get the weather real time all the while connected to your Plasma/LCD/Projector/CRT Televisions! You can even use your xbox as a web server. I guess it also helps that you can xfer your games from DVD to your xbox HD, that effect alone decreases loading time by a lot. Although I must admit PS2 does have the leg up on RPGs.

GTA SA will eventually be on XBox. Build quality is good too? Haha. I can tell you already there are more repaired PS2s then XBoxs easily.
XBox Live is very cheap for what you get and I recommend it.
