Default Why underate horsepower

I can understand why dodge may have underated hp on the srt 4. Insurance reasons maybe. But why are the new z06 viper and ford gt all underated from the factory? Mt dynoed the viper and z06 which are putting about 530 crank hp and the ford gt is about 600 crank hp.
Corvettes big selling point is pounds per hp. I don't get it.

That was dyno on the latest Mustang version.

DCx doesn't underrate the HP numbers but follow the SAE rules for HP measurements. It was a question I asked Ethan at SEMA 2003.

Ford does that I do know since I own a Mustang.

i believe a few companies have faced lawsuits with cars not producing like they are supposed to, the RX-8 comes to mind. Thus, if you underrate them people are thrilled to death when they find out their car is actually more powerful than advertised.

The new z06 dyno I saw made around 460-470 bone stock, and about 496 with longtubes

Insurance reasons perhaps?

I think it's more under promise overdeliver than insurance woes.
Insurance companies are not stupid. They'll know real quick if a car is rated at 300 but really has 350. And rates are more figured on things like how likely this car is to be stolen, and how expensive it is to be fixed if damaged than anything.
I mean I did an insurance quote on an 04 GTO and like an 02 Grand Prix GXP.
The costs for insurance where like within 15 bucks of one another.

Now honestly though...wouldn't you rather hear that your car was rated at one figure and actually dynoed 10-15% more than it was actually rated at? I have never heard any 03/04 Cobra owners or LS1 Camaro owners complain about it.
