Today I was on the Porsche website looking at the new 911 Turbo. They happened to mention the VTG technology applied to it. Though I understood some of was said I didn't completely understand it. Can someone explain it to me in simple terms?
Well, the new 997(911) Turbo does have a variable geometry in the turbocharger, so I am assuming that is what VTG stands for. Basically the impeller blades adjust to give either throttle response or max boost. Basically VTEC for the turbo.
exactly. except for the fact that vtg turbos suck. the variable vane set is housed inside the turbine housing and is uberly precisely machined. so when all those nasty ass particulates from the exhaust cause these to stick you lose all vtg function and who knows in what position it will be in when it sticks. they are mostly used on diesels (international, CAT,Ford) but i assume a gas motor would be less prone to these problems because the exhaust has less particulates.
