Very Interesting news: no sedan for the Neon replacement
Found this on the allpar site. It sounded very interesting and decently detailed. Hemi, care to comment??
______________
There will be no sedan for the Neon replacement.
Here's how it works. The designation code PM49 is correct as stated for the Dodge Caliber. This car will launch in at Belvidere late this year as a 2006 model. It is a 5 door. There will be LHD and RHD versions.
Six months later, a Jeep version will follow at Belvidere. This is the MK49 and is based off the Jeep Compass concept but will also be a 5 door.
Six months after that (probably more like a year) will be the MK74. This vehicle will be a smaller version of the Jeep Commander. Again, a 5 door.
These fall under the "C" Class for Chrysler and originally shared a platform with Mitsubishi (which is launching a sister car in Taiwan). Chrysler may tell the world that they shared a platform with Mitsubishi and this was originally true but many, many changes later, they really don't have much in common. A dirty little secret.
For the uninitiated, the P Bodies were always small cars at Chrysler. The Dodge Shadow was a P-Body, the current Neon is known as PL41 and the PT Cruiser is known internally as the PT44.
When you see a 49 designation that usually indicates a liftgate or hatch
When you see a 41 designation that usually indicates a 4-door sedan.
When you see a 27 designation that usually indicates a convertible.
As for the alleged sedan, that would be the JS41 (Stratus/Sebring replacement) and that falls under the D Class. This car will be produced at Sterling Heights Assembly (SHAP).
...there's a lot going on, on the 4th floor at Auburn Hills. Stay tuned.
Hey Hemi any ideas on when we could place orders??? I am getting one assuming I like the look and I am pretty sure based on what you have said that I will....
Cause a 5 door SRT would not be something I would buy and I doubt a lot of other people would buy it either....
I dunno. 3 years ago I would have said the same thing about people buying a high performance Neon. The car will speak for itself. Just because it's a hatch I don't think would put it out of the minds of a lot of people. I mean look how popular Honda hatches are. And old hatch Foxbody Mustangs are fairly popular as well.

That's true. I for one would not get it though. Unless of course it was lighter than my current SRT and not real fugly...
the car HAS some potential.. its wider than most of the hatches out there, more agressive stance, especially when lowered from its 4x4 position(i'm thinking from stock-knowing dodge)... this may be a pretty damn good sleeper..
