Somewhere between 65% and 90% of new vehicles sold today have an onboard “black box” capable of recording data prior to airbag deployment, and there’s a battle brewing between the federal government and states over the privacy issues surrounding such devices. Just the fact that there’s so much uncertainty around the exact number of devices in use should be a good indicator of the controversy of crash recording devices. In my opinion, such devices have the potential to give engineers vastly improved information about crashes, but third-party access to such information should be allowed only with the explicit permission of the vehicle’s owner, or under court order.
GMs is fully integrated in the main ABS computer. I dont know about Dodges. And lets be realistic. The only time this sucker freezes the buffer and actually stores data is when the airb bags deploy. And AFAIK, the only cases where its been used, the motorist was grossly at fault.
I do agree that the data should only be available with a search warrant/owners permission.

ummm... whose to say they don't start recording this info.. then they put a gps that piggybacks on it. your ins company finds out you were at the track travelling at a high rate of speed. they drop your policy instantly cause they can program that into their tracker... once you open the door - the insurance companies WILL abuse it - there whole existance relies on NOT paying out.
Turbo, theres nothing to say that, which is why legislation now would be good. But the systems right now dont. Jaken, dont know, damn good question. Personally, I wouldnt give up my bags just to cover my ass for driving badly.
so does this data log the whole time or just before deployment because
say the dealer ship could retrive stuff of it when somethign breaks on your car and be like oh we think your driving fast and hard did it is that possible??

Anyone who opposes this because of their policiy being discontinued because of track race needs to realize that if your policy doesn't cover high risk track racing, you shouldn't do it.
Otherwise you are just looking to abuse the fact that you can get away with insurance fraud like the other million assholes in the US that make me pay more for insurance per month. A lot of people are saying this is a bad idea, but what if you get into an accident and someone else is at fault, but it can't be proven and you get dicked for it? Now theres a way to help stop that.
