Default Official: Sponsorship Help....(VERY LONG!)

MODS: PLEASE STICKY!

I got so sick of seeing people post questions about how to, or, did I get scammed by (enter your sponsorship company here)? Well I have been there, done that. My 27 sponsorships speak for themselves.......Here is some VERY USEFULL info that I have used for the three years I have been getting sponsors......it is from the Sema website......

Do you want to get sponsorship for your show car, race car or sound-off special? Here’s a quick overview of why sponsorship sometimes works and sometimes fails, with info on what sponsors are looking for.

Bear in mind that sponsors expect something in return for their money or product. They’re not giving you something for nothing. They have sound business reasons for wanting to sponsor a vehicle.

Also remember that sponsorship is not advertising. Advertising is the direct promotion of a company and/or its product through media.

Sponsorship is a mutually beneficial contract.

WHY SPONSORSHIP WORKS!

Decreasing efficiency of print, TV, radio and other media.
Direct two-way communication.
High consumer acceptance.
Integrated marketing strategies.
Why companies sponsor vehicles:

To build brand image and awareness.
To shape consumer attitudes.
For focused communication.
To differentiate their company from its competitors.
To merchandise product.
To demonstrate technology and product attributes.
To combat their competitors’ larger ad budgets.

WHAT SPONSORS EVALUATE

Image compatibility.
Audience composition.
Ability to drive sales.
Ability to leverage.
Advertising/editorial opportunities.
Product showcase.
Efficiency and measurability of results.
Continuity and ease of administration.
Their goal is to achieve a good return on investment (ROI).

HOW TO PRESENT YOURSELF TO A POTENTIAL SPONSOR

Now is the time to sell yourself, since you will be asking for money, product and/or services. The first step is to develop a proposal. And remember, you're not the only applicant!

This is where you need to communicate your:

Attitude. How much I want to help you.
Commitment. What I'm willing to do to help you.
Follow-up. This is how I will keep you informed of our progress.
The bottom line is to convince a potential sponsor that you provide considerable benefits and a favorable return on investment (ROI).

Specifically, your proposal should include:

A brief description of yourself and your abilities, including your resume.
Your past accomplishments.
Your references, to establish credibility Photographs of yourself and your vehicle.
Your plans and activities. Be specific: what, where, when and why? How the sponsor will benefit from your association, the ROI.How much media coverage can the sponsor expect? What sorts of public relations efforts will you be putting forth (or paying for)?
Your wants and needs, as well as the potential sponsor’s.
Info on other marketing partnerships and associate sponsors, as well as the options for this potential sponsor.
A discussion of your mutual commitments in this relationship, should it come to fruition.
Your "marriage vows."
How you will handle follow-up communications and activities reporting.
The terms of the agreement.
The bottom line: How much and how long?

WHY SPONSORSHIPS FAIL

Greenwashing.
Over-promise and under-deliver.
Failure to commit.
Failure to communicate.
Failure to demonstrate.
Failure to follow up.
In short: Failure to provide a measurable return on investment!

MY PERSONAL INFO ABOUT (INSERT CAR SPONSORSHIP COMPANY HERE) SCAMMING......IF IT HAPPENED TO YOU.....

tisk, tisk, tisk.......I've got 27 FULL (thats right, free) sponsorships, and the only thing I have ever paid for is shipping on some of the larger items.....pay me the $89.00 and I will land you some sponsors too!........(just kidding) it requires more work to land REAL sponsors than $89 can pay for (sportcompactpro,carsponsorships.com,etc.,).

Just put together a GOOD Proposal for your car, put in there what shows/races you plan on attending (the larger the shows/races, the more likely you are to get free stuff), tell them what you have done to your car so far (my car was a BONE STOCK SXT when I started....so it's a myth that your car has to be "pimped out" already), if possible, give them an artists drawing (read: photoshop) of the car when it is completed, let them know how you intend to help them make money (they like it when you ask for lots of Page Ranking (public relations) material, then they know that people will be touched by their product), and last but not least, send some high quality pictures.

Now, when you look for companies to get sponsored by, dont go to distributors (Modern Performance, Summit Racing, Jegs, Crutchfeild, etc.,) these companies have to pay for their equipment so they are less likely to give it away. Instead, go for manufacturers (NX, Eibach, Carbon By Design, AGP ) these companies produce the product, so it costs them very, very little to make, thus are more willing to give it away...

Also, start small, you can't just call up Alpine and expect for your car to make their jaws drop. Companies that are rather large want to see other companies have shown interest in your car first.

Right now is a horrible time to attack companies for full product sponsorships, SEMA is right around the corner, and most companies only allocate enough funds to give product out to entrants into the SEMA show, or a few regular cars throughout the year.....you may send out proposals from Dec.-Mayish......this is the best time, and you are way more likely to land the larger companies for sponsorship during this time.

I have found that calling these companies, if your good on the phone, may help as well.....

I have given you guys some direction, so get after these companies....just remember, wait until Dec., you will thank me later......I can almost guarantee they will tell you no between now and then.......go out there and get your sponsors!!!! I have been doing it for 2-1/2 years and it hasn't slowed one bit!!!! I have 3 more potential sponsors out there as I type this.

It's pretty straight foreward, hell, there are even some manufacturers that have applications on hand for sponsorships, they would be glad to send them to you, all you have to do is ask! You CAN NOT tell me that manufacturers are not sponsoring people, I am proof that they are very much so sponsoring people......you can ask a member of the forums if its true (turbotrix2004) as I have helped him attain 5 sponsors in the last 2 months, free of charge, because he is a freind.....

In conclusion, believe what you want, I go to shows because I love it when people walk around my car more than once and tell me its hot, or ask questions, or photographers bring models to MY car to take pics......I would never pay someone like Sport Compact Pro, they are scam artists and you will not see all the crap they promised you for FREE, maybe a discount.....but that is because they are a distributor that buys parts in huge bulks or pays people like House Of Boom a small fee to bring mass quantities of people to their business.....you know what? I'm not gonna explain it to you, figure it out for yourself!

Oh yeah and when they tell you that your going to get a $20,000 sponsorship, they mean you are going to get a discount that adds up to $20,000......read the fine print yourself.

just my $1.34

Oh yeah, the last time you, or is it the person you cut and pasted that from, came on with the "I'll help you get sponsors just like I did for my friend Bill, for a little money, just a little" you were run out of town by the bullshit flags.

Us neon owners may not be the brightest lights on the porch, but we can remember the last time the exact same bullshit posts were dropped...

I like you Dale, but you CANNOT look for sponsors if they are all at the SEMA show now, can you?

After three years of doing this, I am pretty sure that the information I provided is accurate, and if you were to read this post three years from now, would you say the same thing about the dates of the SEMA show?, it is obvious that I copy and pasted it, but most grown adults take the whole writup and learn something, not pinpoint the tiny flaws.

People, Dale is absolutely WRONG! If you attempt to get sponsors now, after they just spent the majority of their advertising budget, I don't care if you own the only car of your kind in the US, these companies just don't have the money to sponsor anyone right now. They have a very specific budget for sponsorships/advertisements throughout the year, they use the rest of it for SEMA, then they get a new one anytime from Feb-June, but they select the cars at the beginning of the year....I have a ton of experience here. If you don't believe me, try for yourself, you will see how tough it is.

Am I saying that there is not one company out there that won't right now? NO!, BUT!, if you were to call 50 companies, you might get 1 to sponsor you or say that they will.

Easy dale, look at my member number and search my previous posts, those are my words, and I'm not offering anything but my experience, I am just trying to protect people from the $80 "spnsorships" out there. You know you are a complete asshole for assuming you know anything about me for just helping people with my EXPERIENCE..........assumption is the mother of all fusk ups!

Start with Sports Compact Pro. They are always looking to sponsor new cars and people.

I picked up three sponsors yesterday over the phone with people who were at SEMA. SEMA is the best place to look for new partnerships, and you don't even have to be there to do it. SEMA is about the aftermarket, it's when you want to develop relationships. Of course, if you're just looking for free stuff and don't intend to actually do anything, submit proposals with the rest of the crowd in January.

This exact same post, unless I have amazing powers of seeing into other dimensions, was posted here about a year ago. The end result was diverting it into an "I'll write proposals for you for a small fee" term paper type of business. It's easier to quit now and not make it happen.

By the way, member number has nothing to do with the propensity of a member to desire to make money off other members, sometimes with less than admirable devices. I submit Keikei, that goofball in Canada, and Ledet as examples.

The posts are sales pitches, they were last time they were used, they are this time as well. At least come out and tell people what you are selling.

The information in them is not useful, it uses broadstroke generalizations and terms that people not in the industry will not understand. It will however convince the dimmer few with champange dreams that they need somebody to write proposals for them so they don't have to resort to Sport Compact Pro. It's a nice angle, but just come out and say it.

Regards,
Dale

You weren't here the last time this happened, when the last guy who wrote this took peoples money and gave them useless proposals in return. All they had to do was 'tweak them' and then submit them. Problem is, they looked just like every other proposal, without originality or passion, and were refused by all but the easiest (APC for example) companies.
