Yea for real. Although, you really don't have too many 'options' until you hit $20+ per hour/salary + benefits. If I had to do it all over again...I would pay off any car before I started modding it. With your situation, it seems like you won't even have the money to mod it, which blows. Trust me, you will want to mod it. A piece of advice that I MUST dwell upon is...(shop around everywhere for insurance) I saw someone else posted this earlier, but this really is a BIG money saver. I went from paying 220 a month to paying 97 a month. Progressive FTW! I am 23 and have 1 ticket and one accident for your information. If you can pick up an alternate vehicle(daily driver) that also helps on insurance for some companies.
I bought my 03 for 16,500. I couldnt get financed myself being that I'm 20 and dont have much credit established. My boyfriend co-signed with me but my interest rate is still high. I pay 339 a month and insurance is 180 a month. I am on my own policy and its not full coverage. Its def hard paying for it along with all my other bills. The hardest part is trying to save money to put parts in the car and maintain it. It really depends on your lifestyle in my opnion. If you really love the car and want all your extra income going into it then I'd say it's worth it but its up to you. Also these cars arent a regular car as I'm sure you are aware if you have done your research. maintainence and upkeep are going to be much more expensive than on what your currently driving.goodluck!

once you've established your payments for about 6 months or so you may want to look into having it refinanced for a lower rate.

Got mine as an E-6, but I've turned down E-7 twice, first time 5 years ago, the unit offering was in HORRIBLE shape, would have been a dead end, and recently a unit deploying offered a slot but it was WHILE I was deployed and would have required me to deploy again and I wanted a break.
